From Prime Minister Theresa May wiping tears from her face on the steps of Downing Street as she resigned from the post, to the funeral of Zimbabwean politician Robert Mugabe, Reuters has released some of the most captivating images of the last year.

The poignant selection of photos captures the historic events of a turbulent 2019 and further sets the stage for the events to come in the coming year.

2019 was an emotional year for many, and the images really manage to capture the feelings of those who were caught up in protests in Hong Kong, while others capture the triumph of sporting successes of the US women’s football team and Tiger Woods scooping the 2019 Masters.

Natural disasters enabled communities and countries to come together this year, as many were displaced due to flooding in places such as South Sudan.

Places that were also hit by the ever-changing climate included Brazil, where the Amazon rain forest was ravaged by fire.

In other extremes, roads in Russia were completely covered with ice, forcing motorists to drive along a five-kilometre road over the Yenisei River.

Others images reflect on the history of nations, as Russian soldiers, dressed in historical uniforms were pictured lining up to mark the anniversary of a parade in 1941. 

British Prime Minister Theresa May reacts as she delivers a statement in London on May 24. Her resignation came after months of failed Brexit negotiations. During her time as Prime Minister, May struggled and ultimately failed to pass a Brexit deal through parliament and the beleaguered leader announced her decision to step down following a Conservative Party mutiny over her remaining in power

This photo from April 14 shows the moment US golfer Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters. It was his first major championship win in eleven years, which helps explain the emotion in his face while he celebrates after potting the 18th hole. It was his 15th major championship and he finished 3 under par to win by one stroke over Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka

On September 28 Zimbabwe was left in a state of shock after it was announced that one of the country’s most infamous politicians, Robert Mugabe had died. The image above shows the dedication of those who had supported him through his career as mourners are pictured arriving at the Rufaro stadium, in Mbare township where the body of the country’s founder was to lie in state

Unrest began in Chile last October 18 with protests against a rise in transport tickets and other austerity measures and descended into vandalism, looting, and clashes between demonstrators and police. The striking image above shows an injured demonstrator being carried by members of the security forces during one of the protests in Santiago on November 14. The man isn’t wearing a shirt and blood was dripping from him, following protests which have become increasingly violent

Graaff-Reinet has always been an area which has suffered from a lack of water and residents have been used to the dry conditions. November saw one of the driest times for the South African region as the image above shows children playing as caked clay continues to dry up on the municipal dam in the drought-stricken area. The dry spell is now entering its fourth year and many residents continue to struggle

The protests in Chile are in a response to the rise in train fares on Santiago’s Metro system. As well as this residents are also protesting against the rising costs of living privatisation and inequality prevalent in the country. Earlier this month the government rolled out plans to launch a $5.5 billion economic recovery plan

The fire at the historic cathedral touched the hearts of many across the world and organisations immediately pledged to finance the rebuilding of the structure. This caused outrage in some circles as many questioned why money could be found so easily for the building and not for the needs of people in dire situations

Many people were caught up in the attack and many from various places across the world had been in the area at the time. The impact was mostly felt by locals in the area who had their relatives torn from them 

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was pictured waving towards his supporters during a roadshow in Varanasi, India, April 25. Modi has been the Prime Minister of India since 2014. He recently sent soldiers in to pacify the Indian state of Kashmir. He runs a nationalist government and the leader has previously been criticised for his treatment of Muslim citizens in India – he is the 14th Prime Minister of the country

His death hit many across France and mourners were pictured crying in the streets on the day of the funeral. Chirac had championed the European Union but was blighted by corruption scandals in his later years

Canne is an international film festival held in France and often dictates what the biggest movies of the next year will be. Films from all genres are included. It was the 72nd festival this year and Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu served as jury president

The woman looks slightly miserable as she clutches onto the handle bars. Around her, the street is illuminated with lights and stores put their signs out side of shops to entice customers 

A frog was pictured on the leaf of a lotus after the rain at a pond in Lalitpur, Nepal September 26, 2019. The stunning photo makes it look like the amphibian is trapped inside the rain drop. There are a whole plethora of species of frogs in Nepal. There are frogs, newts and toads, including more exotic species such as salamanders. Nepal is home to 12 of the worldwide species of frogs, of which there are over 7,000

The hovels have to be rebuilt after every rain season as they are destroyed as above. The struggle is hard for those who populate the area as they lose most of their belongings

If the militias redeploy prison guards to the front line, there is a risk of jail-breaks. Before Turkey began its offensive in October, European nations had been assessing how to create a mechanism that could ultimately see foreign fighters moved from Syria to face trial in Iraq for war crimes
