An NYPD cop is in hot water after her car ended up in the drink near Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.
Officer Halima Hadire, 39, told cops she was off-duty and with a 42-year-old man in her car near a boat ramp around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday when the vehicle had a mechanical issue and she mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brakes as the pair was trying to diagnose the issue, police sources said Friday.
The vehicle lurched into the water close to a Sanitation Department location and began sinking, she said, according to sources. The pair was able to escape the car before first-responders arrived, Hadire told investigators, sources said.
The car was found sunk about 50 feet from shore in around 20 to 25 feet of water, sources said. It has yet to be raised because of adverse weather conditions, sources said.
Hadire was placed on modified duty after the incident, and the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
It was not clear why the officer was placed on modified duty.
