Over 380,000 kids in Britain have never read a book they own, shocking survey reveals – The Sun

HUNDREDS of thousands of children in the UK don’t own a single book – and it is holding back their reading skills.

A shocking 383,775 UK kids have never read a novel they own, according to a National Literacy Trust survey.

And the non-readers are six times less likely to be above the reading level expected of them compared to children who own books — 3.6 per cent vs 22 per cent. The survey of 56,906 UK youngsters aged nine to 18 also found book owners are nearly three times more likely to enjoy reading — 56.2 per cent vs 18.4 per cent for non-book owners.

The NLT charity warns that as well as poorer reading skills, earlier research showed non-book owner kids are losing out on their mental wellbeing too. Chief executive Jonathan Douglas, said: “Books have the power to transform children’s reading skills, enjoyment and mental wellbeing. Yet far too many are missing out on the chance to reach their full potential.”

To help get kids reading, The Sun’s Books For Schools campaign has £12million worth of books up for grabs for primary schools in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. One in three primary schools have signed up.

Those registered schools who collect 3,500 tokens will get a box of books worth more than £600 from the Collins Big Cat reading programme, including titles by Julia Donaldson and David Walliams. Among those to sign up is Worcesters Primary in North London.
