A news photographer was arrested by police for allegedly refusing to stand on the sidewalk while filming an arrest in Chinatown on Tuesday evening, authorities said.
The shutterbug, Amr Alfiky, was filming cops arrest an emotionally disturbed person at Ludlow Street and Division Street at about 7 p.m., police said.
Cops shouted at Alfiky and a group of other people who were watching and filming the arrest to stand back and get on the sidewalk, an NYPD spokesperson said.
Alfiky, whose work has been featured in Reuters and the New York Times, was arrested after cops said he refused the order and continued to film the arrest.
In a video of his arrest, Alfiky clearly tells police he is a journalist with press credentials.
He was given a desk appearance ticket for disorderly conduct, the NYPD said.
“I’m out and safe. Thank you all for your invaluable support!” Alfiky tweeted after his arrest.
