  • Sir Philip and wife Tina, 72, have been laid low in Monaco after collapse of their Arcadia Group retail empire
  • One of his last appearances was in 2021, when he was seen snarling at photographers outside a London club

Sir Philip Green has been spotted after months away from the limelight, with pictures showing him soaking up the sun with Leonardo DiCaprio aboard a £120million superyacht off the south of France.

The Topshop founder, 70, appeared to be enjoying himself yesterday – taking the wheel of a speed boat before chatting with DiCaprio on the deck of the luxury craft.

The pair are good friends, with DiCaprio, 47, attending Sir Philip’s 60th birthday party in Mexico, where stars Kate Hudson, Naomi Campbell, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ronnie Wood and Kate Moss were also in attendance at the £6million, four-day bash in March 2012.

Sir Philip and his wife Tina, 72, have  been laid low in Monaco after the collapse of Arcadia Group, which fell into administration in 2020 at the cost of more than 700 jobs and 162 store closures, plus a £500million-plus pension scheme deficit.

Sir Philip was last seen two days ago on a yacht off Antibes – a popular hub for celebrities at this time of the year thanks to the Cannes Film Festival – but before that has not been pictured in public for months. One of his last appearances was in October 2021, when he was seen snarling at photographers outside Harry’s Bar, an exclusive London club.

The collapse of Sir Philip’s Arcadia cost of more than 700 jobs and led to 162 store closures in a major blow for the UK high street

He was understood to have been on a brief visit to Britain, in part to have dental treatment. The mogul was accompanied by Tina, who was named last year in the explosive Pandora Papers about offshore tax havens.

The leaked documents appeared to show that she bought four multi-million-pound properties while BHS – the department store she once owned with her husband – teetered on the brink of collapse.

Arcadia’s assets, including the luxury furnishings of Sir Philip’s boardroom, are being sold, the Topshop brand was acquired by online retailer Asos, and Ikea is set to move into the Oxford Street building following its £378 million sale last week. Arcadia also oversaw the chains Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Miss Selfridge.

The Greens previously sold BHS for £1 to former bankrupt Dominic Chappell, who was last year sentenced to six years in jail for tax evasion over the 2015 sale.

The chain collapsed the following year, and MPs subsequently dubbed Sir Philip ‘the unacceptable face of capitalism’ over the affair.

Despite the fall of the one-time high street retail king, the Greens are still worth £910 million, according to The Sunday Times Rich List, and continue to enjoy the trappings of their wealth.

DiCaprio has also been keeping a low profile of late, taking a break from movie sets to enjoy time at his Malibu home with girlfriend Camila.

He was also seen in February enjoying the wedding of British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, where he mingled with the likes of Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell at the English countryside nuptials.

DiCaprio’s next major project sees him reuniting with his Wolf Of Wall Street director Martin Scorsese.

He stars in the true crime drama Killers Of The Flower Moon, which recounts the murders of members of the Osage Tribe in the 1920s, after oil was discovered on their land.

The former billionaire has not been pictured in public for months as he lies low following the collapse of his retail business

DiCaprio is joined by another Scorsese regular, Robert De Niro, while The Power Of The Dog star Jesse Plemons and Certain Women actress Lily Gladstone are also featured.

The eco activist has also recently expanded his green portfolio with an investment in the startup company Wildtype that creates cell-cultivated sushi-grade salmon.

The San Francisco-based company announced in February that DiCaprio had joined as an investor in Wildtype’s $100 million Series B round.

The Oscar-winning actor and environmentalist also took to Twitter to announce his investment.

‘Wild fish populations are threatened more than ever before. I’m pleased to be an investor in @wildtypefoods, the clear leader in cultivated seafood, which will give us the chance to protect our oceans while creating the cleanest seafood on the planet,’ DiCaprio tweeted for his roughly 19.5 million followers.

‘Wildtype will surely transform our food system with its incredible salmon,’ DiCaprio added in a statement announcing the Series B funding.

Sir Philip is known for his love of superyachts, and has recently based himself in Monaco – the Mediterranean city state beloved of the super rich

The San Francisco startup was co-founded by Justin Kolbeck and Aryé Elfenbein with a mission to create the cleanest, most sustainable seafood on the planet. Wildtype is expecting to launch its product in fine-dining partner restaurants after its cultivated salmon gains regulatory approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

It was the second eco-friendly investment announcement by DiCaprio in as many days as he tweeted the day before about his investment in Telmont Champagne.

‘From protecting biodiversity on its land, to using 100% renewable electricity, @maisontelmont is determined to radically lower its environmental footprint. Proud to join as an investor in Champagne Telmont,’ DiCaprio tweeted.
