Who is death row inmate Cleveland Jackson and what did he do?

CLEVELAND Jackson is one of 52 other death row inmates in the United States who is living out his final days behind bars ahead of his execution.

In 2020, 16 people were executed, the highest in a single year since 1896, while another 53 inmates are still on death row.

Who is Cleveland Jackson?

Cleveland Jackson is an inmate in Ohio whose attorneys believe his rough upbringing without a male role model ultimately led to his imprisonment.

According to Theforgivenessfoundation, Jackson's father was stabbed to death in front of him by his mother when he was a toddler.

Jackson's mother allegedly had drug problems and abused him.

She attempted suicide multiple times, resulting in Jackson being placed in foster care.

Jackson was allegedly raped at one of his foster homes and has had several run-ins with the law since he was a youth.

Why is he on death row?

Jackson is on death row for the murders of Jala Grant, 3, and 17-year-old Leneshia Williams.

On January 3, 2000, Jackson and his half-brother, Jeronique Cunningham, decided to rob the apartment of Shane Liles.

Jackson lured Liles out of the apartment to discuss a drug transaction in the staircase of the building, while Cunningham stayed in the apartment watching television with three teenagers, along with Williams and Grant.

Eventually, Cunningham stood up and ordered the teenagers into the kitchen, and when the victims did not immediately comply he stuck one of them in the jaw with his gun.

Jackson then pointed his gun at Liles and ordered him into the apartment, where the duo proceeded to robbing Liles of his money and drugs.

After Jackson robbed Liles, he forced Liles into the kitchen where the teenagers and three other individuals were located.

When Jackson ordered Liles to give him the rest of the money, Liles told him he gave him everything he had, that's when Jackson shot him in the back.

Jackson and Cunningham then opened fire on everyone in the kitchen, and continued until they were out of ammunition.

Everyone in the kitchen was shot at least once – Williams and Grant were killed.

Cunningham and Cleveland Jackson, both of Lima, Ohio, were arrested two days after the shooting.

They were both convicted of attempted murders of the surviving victims, murder of Williams and Grant, and were each separately sentenced to death.

How long has he been in prison?

Jackson was sentenced to death on August 5, 2002.

He's been on death row for 18 years.

He was scheduled to be executed in 2018, but former Governor of Ohio John Kasich delayed the proceeding until May 2019.

Gov Mike DeWine then postponed Jackson's execution date to November 13, 2019, however his date was again pushed back again to Jan. 16, 2020.

Days before his execution was scheduled to take place, it was postponed to June 15, 2023.
