Known as the "Godfather of black cinema," the star passed away at age 89 in New York City.

Maria Marx is the ex-wife of Melvin Van Peebles.

According to NBC, she was a German-born actress and photographer.

She is best known for her involvement in Love Kills in 1998 and Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS in 1975.

The pair got married in the late 1950s but divorced a few years later.

They reportedly lived in Mexico during their marriage.

Does Maria Marx have any children?

Melvin Van Peebles and Maria Marx had a son, actor, and director Mario Van Peebles in 1957.

Their daughter Megan, an actress, died in 2006.

The pair also had a son Max also a film director and actor.

Van Peebles is survived by his children and eleven grandchildren.

Writing at talkhouse her son Mario Van Peebles gave an insight of his childhood and upbringing

"Both my parents were very creative," he starts.

"My mother was into visual arts, specifically photography. My dad was an aspiring writer," he writes.

He continues by explaining why his parents decided to move to Europe in the late 1950s.

The family lived for a while in Amsterdam where Van Peebles was studying astronomy and then moved to France where he worked as a journalist.

"He was 24, she was 21, and they had two small kids and not a lot of money.

"But they were free-spirited; there was no real script to follow.

"My cultural zeitgeist had a lot of shape and flavor and color in it, because I grew up going to see van Goghs and visiting the Parthenon," he added.

He added that his mom would take pictures of him and his siblings and write articles.

"I saw creativity bear fruit. I saw that you could have an idea and speak it, bring it into existence " he writes.
