Selena Gomez’s latest hair transformation is an undeniable tribute to the 2000s. On Aug. 29, the “Ice Cream” singer debuted voluminous curls on TikTok while singing along to her “Calm Down” remix with Rema. Like the chunky highlights and butterfly clips that have been taking over the red carpet, Gomez’s Y2K hairstyle is an homage to one of our favorite beauty aesthetics. Unlike her usual slicked-back style or the straight bob she wears as Mabel on “Only Murders in the Building,” Gomez’s nostalgic look is a welcome throwback to the days of crimped hair, curled roots, and wavy ponytails.
Embracing her 2000s main-character energy, the “Selena + Chef” host even pulled back her bangs with a zigzag headband that could be straight out of a “Lizzie McGuire” episode. Gomez’s makeup further accentuated the Y2K look with thick winged eyeliner, a glossy nude lip, rosy pink eyeshadow, and a swipe of blush on each cheek.
During the video, Gomez fluffed her curls, showing off a short, electric-blue manicure by nail artist Tom Bachik. Before this, the Rare Beauty founder also tried out the Barbiecore nail trend, showing off an almond-shaped manicure in baby pink on Instagram.
Gomez has been playing around with beauty trends from different decades all summer. Just last month, she zoomed past the 2000s and tried out a flipped ’60s hairstyle à la Jackie O.
