- A hack for an easy, bouncy blowout recently went viral on TikTok.
- To test the hack, all you need is five minutes, two hair ties, and a blow-dryer.
- Our editor tried the trick for herself and is sharing her results.
If they made a book called “The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Life,” I would hands down be the first person to purchase it. I’m definitely a bit lazy, but I don’t consider it a bad thing. I just want hacks for easy hairstyles, makeup that takes less than five minutes, and beauty routines that don’t require 30 steps. As long as it allows me to hit the snooze button on my alarm and catch a few extra minutes of sleep, I’m game. So, when I saw a video on TikTok of user Maria Aiello sharing a space-bun hack that got her a perfect blowout in just five minutes, I knew I needed to try it out myself.
In Aiello’s video, she wraps her damp hair into two space buns on top of her head then hits them with a blow-dryer. The result? Perfectly bouncy, slightly wavy, gorgeous hair.
I recently had my hair glossed to a darker brown, and since glosses only last through about 30 washes, I’ve been limiting my shampoos to twice a week at max. I typically blow-dry my hair on a Monday and try to get the style to last as long as possible, so I actually ended up testing out this hack on three-day-old hair, which made me a little nervous that it wouldn’t work for me.
Luckily, trying it out was simple: all I needed was a blow-dryer and two hair ties. You’re meant to test it on damp hair, but since mine was already dry, I ended up spraying it with a little water until it was semidamp. Then, I divided my hair into two sections, with one on each side of my head. From there, I took one section and pulled it into a high ponytail, then I twisted the hair away from my face and into a bun which I secured with a hair tie. After I repeated the same steps on the other side of my hair, I took the T3 AireLuxe blow-dryer ($200), set it on high heat, and held it up to each bun for about 10 seconds total. I then let everything cool for about 10 minutes (but that was an extra step I took that I don’t think is completely necessary).
Once I took my hair out of the buns, I was left with refreshed, bouncy hair that looked almost as good as the day I first washed it. It was ultra shiny (which it tends to be any time I use the T3 blow-dryer) and had a slight wave to it, but the thing I noticed the most was the volume. It gave my hair tons of volume at the root and throughout, and it also gave my curtain bangs the outward swoop that I typically can only achieve with a Velcro roller.
This hack definitely worked for me, and it was easy to master, but I think it had a lot to do with my haircut being similar to Aiello’s. She has a lot of layers in her hair and so do I, which definitely helped with the final outcome.
I’ve tested this hack out a few times, and I’ve found that it works the best on freshly washed hair that is only a tiny bit damp. However, I love using it on blowouts that just need a tiny bit of a refresher, but I typically add in a little bit of dry shampoo at the roots prior to putting my hair up in the space buns.
Either way, this has become a trick I love having in my back pocket whenever I need to refresh a blowout or style my hair quickly without many hot tools.
