From wardrobe flashes and backstage brawls to being BOOED by fans – a look at the WILDEST NTAs moments ahead of the 2023 ceremony
The 2023 National Television Awards are just days away, with the best and brightest of British TV descending on London’s O2 Arena for a wild night of celebrations.
This year proves to be another glitzy event, with big names including Happy Valley, Brassic, Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing battling it out for the top prizes.
And while the NTAs has produced its fair share of excitement, it’s also been packed with shocking moments as stars let their hair down for the night.
Whether it be a hilarious malfunction, being booed by fans or a post-ceremony brawl, the awards are never short of drama.
So, as fans count down the hours until Tuesday’s ceremony, MailOnline takes a look at some of the National Television Awards’ most shocking moments…
Holly and Phil are booed post-‘queue-gate’
Shocking: Days after they faced huge backlash for the ‘queuegate’ scandal, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were booed at last year’s ceremony as they accepted Best Daytime
Days after they faced huge backlash for the ‘queuegate’ scandal, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were booed at last year’s ceremony as they accepted the Best Daytime Award for This Morning.
ITV’s This Morning presenters sparked outrage after they were alleged to have skipped the queue to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II at her lying in state in September 2022.
While he did not address the controversy, Schofield said the award means ‘so much to us every year, especially this year’.
‘Please don’t think we ever get complacent and please don’t think we ever take it for granted. This means so much to us every year, especially this year. We have the best boss.’
Willoughby added: ‘This Morning has a very special relationship with you, you make our show for us, you really do. All these guys on the stage here, Alison [Hammond] and Dermot [O’Leary], Rochelle [Humes] and Vernon [Kay], Josie [Gibson], everyone. Thank you for all your support.’
Despite having won Best Daytime for many years, there are doubts around whether This Morning will win at this year’s ceremony, after the show was shrouded in controversy following Phillip’s affair scandal.
The presenter admitted to an ‘unwise but not illegal’ relationship with a much younger colleague, and has stepped down from ITV altogether.
Judy Finnigan’s wardrobe malfunction
Oops! In 2000, Judy Finnigan suffered an awkward wardrobe malfunction when her blazer fell open to expose her underwear
Back in 2000, daytime TV darlings Judy Finnigan and Richard Madeley took to the stage to accept the award for their hosting duties on This Morning
But Judy failed to notice that her black blazer had slipped open, exposing her underwear for millions of viewers.
While she briefly noticed the blunder, and pulled her jacket shut, it wasn’t until John Leslie rushed on stage that she truly noticed the blunder.
A shocked Judy then finally spotted the gaffe, and covered her mouth in shock while the audience continued to cheer.
The moment was seen by 12 million viewers who were tuning into the ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Luckily Judy and Richard laughed off the incident, and it was even voted the ‘funniest TV blunder ever’ in a poll.
The couple’s daughter Chloe Madeley later shared that they saw the funny side of the error, telling The Sun: ‘Oh, it’s fine. It’s funny. Thank God I was wearing a bra. Imagine if I hadn’t been.’
Chris Hughes’ post-show brawl
Drama! Chris Hughes cast a shadow over his then-girlfriend Jesy Nelson’s win in 2020 when he got into a fight with a photographer outside the ceremony
Love Island star Chris was every inch the proud boyfriend as he watched then-partner Jesy Nelson accept an award in 2020 for her Odd One Out documentary.
But things took a sour turn after the ceremony, when he got into a fight with a photographer over claims he called him a ‘c**t.’
Pictures from the incident showed Chris angrily wagging his finger at the snapper, before they were pulled apart by shocked onlookers.
Jesy was noticeably absent after opting to wait for Chris in a taxi, though pictures showed she was noticeably stoney-faced as the taxi drove away:
Chris later shared a grovelling apology on Instagram Stories, writing: ‘I want to address last nights altercation.
‘I was having an amazing night celebrating the award my girlfriend deservedly won.
‘After coming out of our hotel a particular paparazzi decided to repeatedly call me a name I wouldn’t call my worst enemy, and physically try and start an altercation. As everyone can see I retaliated back badly to this which I totally regret.
‘I’m human. No different to anyone else. However I want to make everyone aware this was only in self defence. I hope people I care about, including my followers, family and friends can understand and forgive me.
‘This night was about Jesy’s win and I’m sorry if I distracted anyone from this. Ultimately, I’m the proudest boyfriend ever and want to congratulate my amazing girlfriend for a deserving win. I am so proud of you.’
Jacqueline and Dan’s row
At odds: After gracing the red carpet at the NTAs together in 2019, Jacqueline Jossa and her husband Dan Osborne reportedly got into a huge row at the after-party
After gracing the red carpet at the NTAs together in 2019, Jacqueline Jossa and her husband Dan Osborne reportedly got into a huge row at the after-party.
The EastEnders actress is said to have demanded to leave when she saw the TOWIE star in conversation with other women.
Insiders told The Mirror that Jacqueline stated: ‘It’s just not cool. I want to go NOW’, before growing ‘really upset’, before she later admitted on Instagram that both parties were drunk during the night on the town.
They were later seen looking tense as they walked inside the venue, with Jacqueline raising her arms towards her husband in a seemingly enraged display.
Shortly after her Instagram post, Dan claimed reports of an argument were ‘nonsense’ however did not elaborate further on the incident.
Danny DeVito is booed on-stage
Mixed: Acting legend Danny DeVito earned a tepid reception when he presented an award at the NTAs in 2019, after including a slew of Arsenal jokes in his introduction
Acting legend Danny DeVito earned a tepid reception when he presented an award at the NTAs in 2019, after including a slew of Arsenal jokes in his introduction.
The It’s Always Sunny In Philedelphia star included a slew of digs at the north London club before the crowd began booing, and went onto mutter that they were being ‘not nice’ to him.
He said: ‘This is a big week for me this week. It’s really nice for me to be here, I’ve got an Arsenal game on Friday night,’ which did not go down well with Tottenham Hotspur fans in the crowd.
He added: ‘Hang on, I’ve got tryouts. I’m going to get Petr Cech’s job – he’s a goalie.’
Danny then forgot to read out the full list of nominees, and eventually presented Drama Performance to Richard Madden for Bodyguard.
Holly and Phillip’s boozy all-nighter
Naughty! Before their partnership came to an end earlier this year, Holly and Phillip left viewers in hysterics in 2016 when they turned up to host This Morning after an NTAs all-nighter
While Holly and Phil’s NTAs winning streak may come to an end this year, for over a decade the duo were known for their boozy antics.
The pair would typically be more delicate than most while hosting This Morning the next day, and in 2016 they took things to the next level by pulling a wild all-nighter.
Celebrating their win, Holly and Phil headed to pal Ant McPartlin’s house for a night of games and drinking, and then went straight to the This Morning studio the next morning to host the show.
Still sporting her red carpet gown, Holly struggled to hide stains on her dress as she and an equally-hungover Phil soldiered through the show, and at one point even tucked into a whole cake with a serving spoon.
While their behaviour left viewers in utter hysterics, Holly and Phillip vowed they’d never let themselves get in such an on-screen state again.
The National Television Awards will air on Tuesday, September 5 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
