Alex Scott has confirmed she was in a relationship with former Arsenal teammate Kelly Smith, recalling falling ‘madly in love’ with her.
The pundit and former Lionesses player will open up about the romance, and her heartache when they split, in her memoir How (Not) To Be Strong.
Alex said she nearly couldn’t bring herself to write the chapter, but added at her book launch in London that it would have felt like ‘cheating’ to leave it out.
‘I went back and forth on whether I’d actually be writing the chapter,’ she said.
‘But then it was one of those moments, I’m writing this book and I want to tell everything. I thought I’d be cheating you all if I didn’t put that in there. And for me, it’s like that first love story, I fell madly and deeply in love.
‘And yes, there’s that heartbreak and those things, but it’s a huge part of my life and I wouldn’t go back and change that,’ she added, according to The Mirror.
‘Because that feeling of love and that excitement and what it gives you, it needed to be in there.’
Alex and Kelly both signed for Arsenal in 2005 before transferring together Boston Breakers in the US in 2009 and both moving back to the UK in 2012.
The pair have previously spoken out on their close relationship, with Kelly explaining that she loved playing in the US, partly because of having Alex there.
‘This time, with the improvements I had made within myself, and with Alex there to bounce things off – somebody who knew me inside and out – it was a totally different prospect,’ she said.
In 2016, Kelly married DeAnna Dobosz, with the pair sharing two children – Rocco and Lucia.
Alex is currently single, telling The Times: ‘I’ve been single for a while now, and I think that’s because I needed to be.
‘There were patterns in my relationships that I knew were not healthy. I understand myself more now. Before I always had these walls up because I was trying to protect myself and protect people around me.
‘Now I’m ready to let them all down. I’m ready to be loved.’
While she has kept her personal life largely out of the spotlight, she will open up in her memoir, which will cover everything from her difficult upbringing to her success as a footballer, and her mental health.
In November, Alex will be heading to Doha to present the BBC’s World Cup coverage, as well as presenting Sports Personality Of The Year in the UK.
