Anneka Rice sparks backlash as she’s accused of ‘body-shaming friend’ on X

Anneka Rice’s friend gets stuck on helter skelter at Kew

Channel 5 star Anneka Rice has faced backlash on social media after apologising for her friend in a tweet that some of her followers described as “body-shaming”.

Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, the presenter shared a short clip from her visit to see Kew Gardens’ Christmas display.

In view of her 71,900 followers, she captioned the video: “This was the tense scene at ‘Kew at Christmas’ last night when my generously proportioned friend got stuck on the helter skelter.

“It took 2 men,a helicopter & 6 firemen. I can only apologise to all the small children and @MissAlexjones⁩ waiting patiently for their turn,” she added, tagging The One Show presenter Alex Jones. (sic)

Some of Anneka’s followers were amused and intrigued by the tweet, with Steven querying: “Shall I ask ‘how’ your friend became stuck!!?”

“Just don’t… I’m trying to move on,” Anneka quipped back, as Steven added: “Oh dear!”

“A helicopter?!” asked Sarah, as Anneka aditted: “I might have exaggerated. It might have been one bloke…”

“It sounds like the start of a song? I was waiting for the next line!!” Andy chimed in, while Anneka added: “Or the title of my memoir…”

However, some of Anneka’s followers did not find the tweet particularly funny, instead branding it “nasty” and “mocking” of her friend’s weight.

“Why would you put this on twitter?” Serena asked. “You my be calling her your friend but this isn’t something a friend would do….

“I hope she is questioning your friendship today….. nasty nasty nasty!!!” (sic)

While Debz agreed: “Nothing like you body shaming your friend on social media for the world to see.”

“Is this supposed to be funny?” Monica fumed, as Amy sarcastically agreed: “Wow, we all need ‘friends’ like you.”

Another follower added: “Wow I’m sure your ‘generously proportioned’ friend might be rather hurt that you would mock her size on social media, and question whether you are indeed a friend at all. But hey, sure you got a few laughs eh.” (sic)

It comes just days after Anneka sent out a post about “kindness” at the beginning of this week.

On Monday, she tweeted: “#WorldKindnessDay My world is full of people who are the very best of humanity.

“I’m giving a hug of intense gratitude to the thousands of extraordinary people who have helped on our projects over the last 35 years.

“And still are! Nothing says kindness and community like YOU!”
