The actress, who scooped the Best Supporting Actress gong at last year’s ceremony for ‘West Side Story’, takes the stage to deliver a rap about the female nominees.
AceShowbiz -Some fans were not happy with Ariana DeBose‘s opening performance at the 76th British Academy Film Awards. The former winner has been ridiculed on social media over her “awkward” performance.
The 32-year-old actress, who won Best Supporting Actress award last year for “West Side Story“, took to the stage on Sunday night, February 19 with a rap about the female nominees.
The performance began with a song as she was joined by dancers who tore off her skirt in impressive scenes, before going on to name check members of the star-studded audience, including “Squid Game” star Ho-Yeon Jung, Dolly De Leon, Kerry Condon, Carey Mulligan, Emma Thompson, Ana De Armas, Danielle Deadwyler, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.
“All the ladies in the room/ supporting and leading all here, I presume/ Ho-Yeon Jung, Dolly De/ Kerry and Carey with a C/ Dame Emma, I’m so fond/ Ana, girl, you’re great in ‘Blonde‘/ Danielle D, you broke my heart/ Michelle, I’ve loved you from the start,” Ariana rapped. “Angela Bassett did the thing/ Viola Davis my ‘Woman King’/ Blanchett Cate, you’re a genius/ Jamie Lee you are all of us.”
Critics quickly raced to Twitter to share their thoughts on Ariana’s opening performance. Some labeled the special shout-out “cringe” and “awkward,” while some admitted that they were “pissing” themselves laughing. “Bit cringe,” one person tweeted. Someone else said, “Can’t say I was a fan of that rapping.” A third added, “Pissing myself laughing at the Ariana DeBose BAFTA song. Why did this happen?”
Others, meanwhile, had nothing but praise for Ariana, claiming it was the celebs in the audience that made the performance awkward. “Omg Ariana Debose really giving a great performance and the BAFtA audience (except for the American actors) really giving her absolutely nothing,” one said. Someone else chimed in, “Great song from Ariana DeBose, I actually liked how the nominees were worked in, could’ve been tacky.”
