Iconic Australian comedian Barry Humphries, 89, has been rushed to hospital just days after being discharged.

He recently underwent hip replacement surgery, but due to complications, he was readmitted to hospital.

Respected entertainment journalist Peter Ford told Sunrise that the comedian’s health had worsened in recent days, forcing his return to a hospital in Sydney.

‘Australia loves you and will always be grateful for everything you have given us, and I think Barry has a fighting spirit that he won’t give up easily,’ Ford said.

It comes just weeks after Humphries said he was in ‘agony’ after a fall at his home, forcing him to undergo hip replacement surgery.

Humphries said the injury to his hip occurred when he tripped on a rug while reaching for a book.

At the time, Humphries said he was hoping to recover in time for another ‘one man show’ to be held later this year.

‘I have to get back on my feet … I’m going back on tour later this year. The result of my broken hip means I now have a titanium hip … you can call me ‘Bionic Bazza’,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald at the end of last month.

Throughout his career, Barry – and his alter ego Edna – has met and charmed most of the Royal Family, from the late Queen Mother to King Charles III.

The Melbourne native has played the much-loved character Dame Edna since 1955.

He was just 21, a university dropout and aspiring artist when he created the persona for which he would later become world-famous.

He has been married four times and has four children, including actress Tessa and journalist Oscar.

Last year, Humphries toured the UK with his show Barry Humphries: The Man Behind the Mask.
