Bruce Willis’ wife Emma in tears as she marks his 68th birthday after dementia diagnosis

Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming Willis fought back tears on Sunday as she emotionally celebrated her husband's 68th birthday after his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.

Earlier this year, Bruce's wife Emma, 44, and his ex-wife Demi Moore, as well as the star's eldest children Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, announced in a "painful" statement that the actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday 19 March to celebrate Bruce's 68th birthday, Emma fought back tears as she shared an emotional message with fans.

She said in a video: "So today is my husband's birthday. I have started the morning by crying. As you can see by my swollen eyes and snotty nose, I just think it's important you see all sides of this.

"I always get this message or people always tell me like, 'Oh you're so strong, I don't know how you do it.' I'm not given a choice. I wish I was. But I'm also raising two kids in this.

"So sometimes in our lives we have to put our big girl panties on and get to it. And that's what I'm doing. But I do have times of sadness every day. Grief everyday. And I'm really feeling it today on his birthday."

In the second video, Emma fought back tears as she said: "So I worked on this reel that I'm posting for my husband's birthday. I don't know why I do that to myself because the videos are like a knife in my heart.

"But as much as I do it for myself I do it for you. Because I know how much you love my husband and – don't cry Emma – but it means so much to me so thank you."

Captioning the videos, Emma wrote: "Today is one of those days of feeling the grief and sadness. But the silver lining or the flip side is that I’m so lucky to feel your warmth and love that is directed to my husband and our family.

"I see your messages, your stories that you share, and all I can say is thank you. Your connection helps me and I hope it helps you in a small way to know that I see you and I deeply understand your journey as well. #ftdawareness #griefshare #dementiaawareness #gratefullness."

Earlier this year, Bruce's family released the following statement: "Our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we have all received since sharing Bruce’s original diagnosis.

"In the spirit of that, we wanted to give you an update about our beloved husband, father and friend since we now have a deeper understanding of what he is experiencing.

"Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD).

"Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.

"To read our full statement and learn more about this disease please go to the link in our bio. In Love & Gratitude Ladies of Willis/Moore."

According to the NHS, frontotemporal dementia is an uncommon type of dementia that causes problems with behaviour and language.

Bruce was married to fellow A-lister Demi for 23 years and together they share daughters Rumer, Scout, Tallulah. He is also dad to two daughters with his second wife, Emma.

Bruce’s lengthy and hugely successful career has seen him star in many hit films such as Pulp Fiction, Sin City and Armageddon.

One of his biggest roles is that of John McClane in 80s blockbuster Die Hard, which spawned a franchise.
