Caroline Flack’s mother doesn’t accept Met Police’s apology
It has been three years since Caroline Flack took her own life aged 40 after she had been due to appear in court over the alleged assault of her then-boyfriend, Lewis Burton, in the weeks before her death, in 2020.
In February the Metropolitan Police apologised to her mum, Christine Flack, for not recording the reason why she had been charged – an apology she has rejected.
The X Factor and Love Island host’s mum has now opened up about her daughter’s relationship with Prince Harry which she has confirmed was a friendship.
The prince and Caroline were said to have briefly dated in 2009.
In a new interview, Christine also discussed the police’s handling of Caroline’s assault case to her daughter’s eventual suicide in February 2020.
Speaking about the Duke of Sussex, she revealed Harry “kept in touch” with her daughter, adding he’s a “nice lad”.
Addressing the pair dating, Christine told Times Radio: “It was more of a friendship. And I knew about it, he visited my other daughter. He was a nice lad. And it didn’t go any further because of that.
“They know that anything was going to happen. But he’s a nice and he kept in touch with her, and she kept in touch with him.
“And she knew that, you know, he absolutely loved Meghan, loves, you know, and so I don’t think that was a bad thing. I would never say that was a bad thing in her life.”

Christine said although she has not read Spare she has read excerpts where he mentioned Caroline.
In the book, Prince Harry says he hadn’t known who Caroline was when he first met her at a restaurant with friends – telling her “I don’t watch much TV”.
Calling her “funny and loving,” he mentions several dates the couple went on to have, but says they decided to end the relationship due to press harassment.
He writes: “Very soon after [the photographers] papped me and Flack, those photos set off a frenzy. Within hours a mob was camped outside Flack’s parents’ house, and all her friends’ houses, and her grandparents’ house.
“She was described in one paper as my ‘bit of rough’, because she once worked in a factory or something. Jesus, I thought, are we really such a country of insufferable snobs?”
He says they continued to see each other “on and off, but we didn’t feel free any more”.
Harry added: “The relationship was tainted, irredeemably, and in time we agreed that it just wasn’t worth the grief and harassment. Especially for her family.”
Caroline briefly mentioned the pair’s relationship in her 2014 autobiography, Storm In A C Cup.
Later in Spare, Harry mentions the presenter’s death, writing: “Caroline Flack, a very good friend of mine, had taken her own life. By the looks of things, she couldn’t bear it anymore.”
“The years of constant harassment by the press had killed her,” he claimed.
“I felt awful for her family. I can’t forget how much she suffered for her fatal sin of going out with me.”
