Charles made savage joke to Princess Diana just moments after she gave birth to Harry

King Charles III allegedly told the late Princess Diana that his 'work was done' following the birth of Prince Harry in 1984.

Eight months on from its publication, this revelation arrived in the latter's headline-grabbing memoir Spare, with Harry, 38, recalling how his father had joked at the time: "Wonderful! Now you've given me an heir and a spare. My work is done".

Harry is of course the younger brother of Prince William, the heir to the British throne, but things in The Firm are long since amicable following the former's marriage to Meghan Markle; their subsequent relocation to California, and shedding of all royal duties.

Harry will fly to London next month in honour of the WellChild charity, but it's reported that a first reunion in 12 months between Harry, Charles, 74, and William, 41, to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's death anniversary is not on the cards.

Releasing a statement through the organisation, Harry recently confirmed: "For nearly 20 years, WellChild has been transforming the lives of children and young people across the UK, providing critical care that priorities the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of these individuals and their families.

"The courage and strength embodied by these young people – and the tireless devotion of those who support them – never cease to inspire me. I’m honoured to attend this year’s awards ceremony and celebrate their incredible work."

A source for OK! was previously optimistic of a coming together for the trio, exclusively telling us: "King Charles is due to return to London from Balmoral in the middle of September which ties with the end of Harry’s Invictus Games trip to Dusseldorf. The King has a rescheduled official visit to France on September 20 so has a few days to spare in London to meet with his son. Staff are trying to fine-tune the details as we speak.

"The King loves his son very much but he has been mortally wounded by what he has done. He will always be there for him but draws the line at public slanging matches. If the talks take place, the King will make it very clear that there will be absolutely no private family business discussed in public moving forward."

Historian, writer and broadcaster Tessa Dunlop has also gone on to suggest that William's wife Kate Middleton, wants to calm the stormy waters between the brothers.

"I've always thought Kate is quite a good egg," she told OK! this month. "She's the kind of classic upper-middle-class girl, that if you look at her background would always hope to maintain civil relationships, would not want to have bad blood and probably recognises that she has a lot that Meghan and Harry in a way don't have.

"Kate did have that very secure upbringing, a very secure place in the Royal Family, in line for the number one gig and probably is only self-consciously realising that she can afford to be generous in terms of reaching out and I think she would want to reach out [to Harry]."
