Cheryl celebrated turning 40 by sharing a fun selfie that left fans praising her as an “icon” after they spotted an unusual detail.
The Geordie singer, who found fame after winning a place in the girl band, Girls Aloud, in the TV contest Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, reached the milestone birthday on Friday and marked it by posting a picture of her posing in a back garden.
The photo, uploaded to her Instagram account, showed the pop star sporting a hippie chic look – including green flares, a pink tie front shirt and flower sunglasses.
She captioned the picture: “So…this is 40,” followed by a flower emoji to match her eyewear. But eagle-eyed fans were left distracted after they noticed she was wearing not one but two pairs of sunglasses – as she also had a pair resting on top of her head.
One follower commented: “2 pairs of sunglasses? We love to see it.” Another replied: “She’s a queen.” A third added: “What an icon.”
Earlier this month, it was reported Cheryl was set to make a career comeback – although not in the world of pop music. She racked up a string of hits with Girls Aloud and in a successful solo career but has not released any new music for a number of years, and now appears to be pivoting her career towards acting.
She made her West End debut this year in Danny Robins' play 2:22 A Ghost Story, where she starred alongside EastEnders' Jake Wood from January to April. A source told The Sun the job had breathed new life into her career and she was keen to give other roles a go.
The source added: "She knows her time as a pop star has come to an end and she openly admits she no longer understands the music industry, but being back on stage was a real buzz for her.
"She loved every minute and wants to get another show under her belt. There are multiple offers on the table so it’s about picking the one that is right for her."
Also this month, it was reported Cheryl wanted to "have her say" as she came in for criticism for the age gap between her and ex Liam Payne in the wake of the Phillip Schofield affair scandal.
Cheryl and One Direction star Liam, who share a son, Bear, got together in February 2016 before they split in 2018. However, they first met on The X Factor in 2008 when Cheryl, who was married to footballer Ashley Cole at the time, was a judge and Liam auditioned as a 14 year old.
Phillip, 62, left This Morning last month after admitting to an "unwise but not illegal" fling with a much younger colleague. The pair first met when Phillip was invited to visit the unnamed young man's drama school.
This led to accusations of ‘grooming’ – which Phillip strongly denied in a BBC interview – and many pointed out Cheryl had met Liam in similar circumstances.
A source said: "Cheryl fears this is going to blow it all up for her, because no one wants to be associated with anything like that. She’d love nothing more than to have her say, but she knows it never comes out that way.
"For Cheryl, the 14-year-old thing is so twisted, and infuriating – she was married at the time, and there was absolutely no link with Liam there at all."
