Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up on the poignant letter he received from Queen Elizabeth II and her family after the death of his newborn baby son.
The Real Madrid football superstar and Portugal captain, 37, was getting ready to welcome his son during 28 year old girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez's labour on April 18.
Sadly, the infant, whom the couple named Angel, died during birth, but his twin sister Bella survived.
Following the heartbreaking news, the sportsman was sent a wave of support from football fans and even the Royal Family.
During an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, the player shared how taken-aback he was to receive a special letter in the post.
He said: "I never ever expect that. Never. I have the opportunity now to say, all English community, thank you a lot for that, kind of that they held with me.
"Not only Liverpool, but all England. I received a letter from The Queen's family as well … And, [that] surprised me a lot…"
"This is why I say, I respect a lot, the English community, English people," Ronaldo continued. "Because they've been very kind with me. And in that difficult moment of my life… [the support] was spectacular.
"The way they treat me, me and my family in that difficult moment, I should say straight to the camera thank you. Thank you," Cristiano expressed his gratitude. "To all the English community that helped me in that moment."
The footballer also opened up on how tough it was to break the devastating news to the rest of his children when he and Georgina returned home from the hospital.
Cristiano said that he had a poignant and emotional conversation with his eldest son, who has the same name, and they cried together.
Eventually, after the little ones kept asking where the baby was, especially after seeing Georgina with a bump for months, the couple decided to share the truth with them too.
"After one week I say: 'Let's be up front and let's be honest with the kids, let's say that, Angel, which is the name, they go to the Heaven.'
"It's better to say in that way. And the kids always understand, at the table they say: 'Daddy I did this for Angel' and they point out [to the] sky," the player added.
Cristiano and Georgina share two other children, and the athlete has three others born to surrogate mothers.
The star revealed it was his partner who helped him make the decision to return to football after their baby son's death.
