In an interview with the DAZED magazine, the 15-year-old rising model also opens up about how her ‘relationship with fashion has really evolved over the years.’
AceShowbiz –Dwyane Wade‘s daughter has scored her first magazine cover. Zaya Wade, who came out as transgender in 2020, fronted the latest issue of the DAZED magazine.
For the cover shoot, the 15-year-old sported monochromatic ensembles. She also modeled pieces from one of her favorite brands, Miu Miu.
In the interview with the magazine, Zaya shared, “My relationship with fashion has really evolved over the years.” She added, “It started out as, ‘Oh, my parents are super fashionable, and I want to dress up and be as fashionable as them.’ “
“But, as time has passed and I’ve become more integrated into the fashion world, it’s become a really important part of expressing myself and my identity,” she added. “Whether I’m wearing a dress for winter formal or wearing a suit for a shoot, it’s just a way to level up my iconic-ness, I feel.”
Zaya revealed that her parents are her fashion inspirations. In addition, she mentioned model Anok Yai as someone to look up to.
During the sit-down, Zaya opened up about the lesson that her stepmom Gabrielle Union taught her. “The lesson has changed over time, but more recently it’s that beauty is in yourself. It’s about being you and expressing yourself the way you want to,” she said.
“She tries to teach me that beauty standards are arbitrary and that they don’t mean anything,” Zaya, who made her runway debut during Paris Fashion Week earlier this month, continued. “They don’t matter any more; what people thought was the standard is not. And just that being myself is the best technique out there.”
