EastEnders fans are set to join Linda Carter on a super sleuth trail in an attempt to get to the bottom of newcomer George Knight's hidden secret.
George, played by newbie Colin Salmon and who is best known for his role as MI6 deputy chief of staff Charles Robinson in three Bond films, has made himself comfortably at home as Elaine Peacock's new life partner and settles in at The Queen Vic. All is not as it seems though and Elaine's daughter, Linda, can smell a rat.
George arrived in Walford with his two adult daughters, Anna and Gina, in tow but Linda, played by Kellie Bright, has struggled with the Knight family invasion on her home turf.
And in a further twist, George will decide next week to have a completely fresh start and take his relationship to the next level, getting down on bended knee to propose to Elaine, played by Harriet Thorpe. Fans will be left, like Linda, questioning his intentions.
So far viewers have had few clues about who George truly is and what his life has been before arriving on the Square, but next week Elaine will confide in Linda about Gina and Anna's mother – setting Linda on a trail of investigation.
Elaine explains that the unknown woman walked out on her daughters and George nine years ago and she never looked back. Linda then overhears George on a call and realises he hasn't sold his Marbella bar after all, keeping the secret from her mother.
This spells bad news for the Vic because unbeknown to Elaine, this means he has no money to support the pub's accounts.
In an act of defiance though, when Linda confronts him and attempts to throw him out, George stuns the bar with his grand proposal – but there's something more underhand to this gesture, and Linda knows it.
Fans have already theorised that George may have a shock connection to a former sinister EastEnders villain, Cindy Beale, who was last heard of in 1998 when she was arrested for her attempted hit on her ex-husband, Ian.
Cindy was pregnant with her former boyfriend Nick Holland's baby at the time of her arrest but once she was found guilty of attempted murder, Nick left her in prison with no money for a lawyer.
Cindy's demise came when Ian received news in November 1998 that she had supposedly died during childbirth, but her daughter, also named Cindy in her mother's memory, had survived.
EastEnders has received rave reviews for the coverage of fearless Lola Pearce-Brown's death following brain cancer. The poignant and gutwrenching scenes aired last night, with fans unable to contain their tears.
