Ed Sheeran was disappointed to read “negative” rumours suggesting he had turned down the opportunity to perform at the “historic” Coronation, and he’s desperate to clarify that he never turned King Charles III down.
In a new radio interview, he revealed that – despite what some media sources have said – he was never invited to be part of it.
Appearing on Sirius XM’s The Morning Mashup, he insisted: “I want to clear something up actually because there was loads of stuff in the press that I turned down the Coronation, and no one ever asked me ever.
“I assume if they went online and went, ‘What’s Ed doing on May 6th?’, they would’ve been like, “Oh, he’s playing in Dallas,'” the Shape of You singer suggested, referencing a previous commitment.
“I think that’s what happened, but obviously, [the] press had the negative story of loads of people turning down the Coronation.

“I never ever turned it down,” he continued, adding that he was “excited” to be tuning in from afar instead.
It will be around 3am in British time when Ed takes to the stage in Texas tonight, making it impossible for him to headline both events.
The Coronation Concert will be held at Windsor Castle, with Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Take That headlining, and other favourites including Andrea Bocelli also expected to perform.
Ed had previously explained that his Belfast-born grandfather was a keen royalist who would have been ecstatic to have seen him receiving his MBE.
“My grandfather was a huge, huge royalist and loved the royal family, had commemorative plates and s***. He was bang into it,” he exclaimed to the Irish Times back in 2017.
“He sadly passed away in 2013 but when the MBE came in, I remember being with my Dad and being like, ‘Ah s***, wouldn’t it be cool if granddad was alive now to see this?'” he reminisced.
Ed was awarded a special place in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and received his MBE in the summer of 2017 at Buckingham Palace.
However, the star revealed bashfully to NBC News afterwards that he thought he may have broken royal protocol in his excitement to be recognised at the event.
“Apparently, I did a big faux pas… I shook his hand and then grabbed it and you’re not meant to do that!”
In a previous run-in with the Royal Family, he claimed Princess Beatrice accidentally cut his face when pretending to knight him with a sword.
“For two weeks after, I had a huge gash on my face and would tell people I fell, and then suddenly, the story came out, allegedly!” he told Graham Norton on his show.
