Ellie Goulding has admitted that she was “in denial” about having a baby “for a good seven months” after discovering that she was pregnant with son Arthur.
The singer has been out of the limelight for the last couple of years after getting married and becoming a mum. But as she released her new single, Easy Lover ft. Big Sean, last week, she spoke out about her surprise at becoming pregnant and how she will want her son to be proud of her when he is older.
While discussing her new single, Ellie admitted that the last two years during COVID have been “pretty mad” and told Heart Radio: “Then I had a child. I had an actual child, so that was a big thing. But I was kind of in denial about it for a good seven months until I finally started showing.”
It isn't the first time Ellie has spoken about her “surprise” pregnancy.
She didn't break the news that she was expecting until she was 30 weeks pregnant in 2021. She told Vogue magazine "It was crazy because it was our one-year anniversary. That was not the plan. The thought of getting pregnant didn’t seem like it could be a reality."
Ellie, 35, married art dealer Caspar Jopling, 30, on the 31st August 2019 at York Minster. They welcomed little Arthur, who is now 14 months old, on April 29th 2021.
And when asked if having her son had made her change the way she writes music, she told Heart radio: "No, I can’t do that, I feel like I have to stick to what I do.
"My writing process is always changing and evolving. There’s always something heavy to write about. The next album is more electronic, upbeat and dancy, it’s not like I’ve written an album dedicated to my son but I definitely think in the future if he’s watching me perform I’ll feel weird about the way I’m moving or whatever.
"But I want him to be proud of me, so that’s a new thing.” Ellie admitted that because of COVID, she didn’t see her last album, Brightest Blue, in 2020, “come to life” and said it was weird because she had to do American TV shows “in the toilet” because of travel restrictions during the pandemic.
However, she revealed that she was glad to be back doing what she loves, and said, “I’ve missed it. I feel like I haven’t been able to talk about music – the thing that I love.”
But don’t expect ballads and love songs from her new album, which is due out “very soon”. Ellie said it will be “dancy, electronic and upbeat”.
