Emmerdale’s David Metcalfe exit theories: How will Matthew Wolfenden depart the soap after 17 years – as speculation grows there will a ‘shock death and surprise reunion’
Matthew Wolfenden has reportedly quit his role as David Metcalfe on the ITV soap after 17 years.
And now Emmerdale could have a hefty plot up their sleeves for David’s departure.
The actor, 43, who first joined the show in 2006, has been involved with a number of big storylines over the years.
With huge speculation that David could be killed off from the show, a surprise reunion and shock return from Maya Stepney could also be on the cards.
A source told The Sun: ‘Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change. He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.

‘He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next,’.
Before adding: ‘He’s very excited about the opportunities available. He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed’.’
On the soap, David was diagnosed with testicular cancer which could quite possibly be the cause of his ‘departure’.
And when he dated serial killer Meena Jutla, who was angered when David dumped her for Victora Sugden, will she make a shock return?
When David was dumped with a baby boy on his doorstep at Christmas in 2019 after falling pregnant with Maya, it was unknown who the father was initially.
But when she went to prison, it was soon confirmed that David was the father of Theo.

Another theory could see David reunite with Jacob’s step-mum Alicia Gallagher, whom he was married too before she fled in 2015, and start a life in Portugal where she lives.

Matthew and Isabel who portrays his on-screen partner Victoria Sugden, had been off screen following claims ‘the accent of a mixed-raced actress was mimicked’ on set, with the characters’ absence being explained by the pair taking an extended Portuguese holiday.
The unnamed actress was upset following an inappropriate comment made towards her, before it was claimed her accent was mocked during the fall out.
