Famed for her excellent sense of humour, Sarah, Duchess of York has revealed that she has given her reconstructed breast a funny name following her diagnosis for breast cancer and "successful" mastectomy.
Speaking on her weekly podcast 'Tea Talks', Sarah – often known as Fergie – admitted to her co-host Sarah Thomson that she has named her left breast “Derek” as she thinks of it as her “perky friend” who saved her life after a cancer scare.
The Duke of York’s ex-wife told listeners: “I am just coming to terms with my new best friend Derek, on my left, he’s called Derek. He’s very important because he saved my life.”
Asked why she picked the name Derek, Fergie joked: “I don’t know. It just made me laugh that I have now a friend who is with me all the time who is protecting me with his shield of armour.”
She added: “I have a got a perky here friend on my left. Poor Eric on the right is feeling rather sad because he is not as perky as Derek on the left but I will get Eric balanced, don’t worry.”
Sarah said she is “getting much better” and that she was “kind of proud of the amazing work” of the surgeons and doctors who helped her.
Sarah previously appeared on the podcast to thank her sister Jane for forcing her to go for her mammogram after she almost gave the routine appointment a miss.
She said, “It was after a bank holiday…and it was a hot day, I didn’t feel like going to London. It’s easy to put it off. I always normally do what she says because she gets so cranky. She said, ‘No, go. I need you to go.’
"I normally do what she says because she gets so cranky," the royal admitted, before crediting her sister for being so persuasive with her. "She's right. Thank you, Jane."
The Duchess has been a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust for more than 30 years, and encouraged both her daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie to work with the charity, with both of them later becoming ambassadors.
