A trailer recently released by Warner Bros. for Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg‘s musical remake of The Color Purple features Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, H.E.R. and more.
Fantasia, for whom the musical is a major motion picture debut, stars as Celie, reprising her Broadway role.
“Today, our teacher taught us about a place called Africa,” Bailey, playing young Nettie Harris tells her older sister Celie to open the preview. “She say our mamas come from queens over there. That means that we? Royalty.”
“Dear Celie, we have more than just kings and queens,” Bailey’s Nettie says. “We are at the center of the universe.”
The Broadway musical’s hit song “I’m Here” plays in the background of the trailer. The trailer also showcases H.E.R., Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Corey Hawkins and Danielle Brooks, in addition to Bailey and Barrino.
Spielberg directed the original, non-musical version of the story in 1985. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards at the time of its release.
The Blitz Bazawule-directed The Color Purple, described by Warner Bros as a “bold new take on the beloved classic,” is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day (Dec. 25).
