Hurricane G dead: Tributes flood in from hip-hop world as they mourn the passing of trailblazing female rapper Gloria Rodriguez aged 52 following a lung cancer battle

Hurricane G has died aged 52. 

The trailblazing female rapper, born Gloria Rodriguez, was confirmed dead on Sunday by EPMD’s Erick Sermon, 53, with whom she shared her only child, daughter Lexus Cannon.

Her cause of death has not been revealed, however, back in May, Hurricane G’s daughter, Lexus, announced that her mother had stage 4 lung cancer.

Dead: Hurricane G has died aged 52

Posting on Instagram, Erick penned: ‘My heart is hardened today. One of my good friends… my oldest daughters mother passed away today,,’.

The musician then described Hurricane G as ‘a legend in her own right in the Hiphop community,’ explaining how she ‘paved the wave.’ 

On Monday, Hurricane G’s daughter Lexus Cannon posted a photograph of them together to Instagram and asked ‘wtf am I supposed to do without you?’ as she shared her devastation

In May, on her mother’s last birthday, Lexus took to Facebook, where she revealed alongside a photograph of the smiling rapper: ‘My mom has stage 4 lung cancer.

‘Don’t know how many of you understand what that means but even after 30 years of life I’m still trying to process it myself. I have never cried so much in my life I have never felt so disconnected from reality in my life.

‘Yet my mom still managed to be the one to hold it together and say ”don’t worry baby everything’s gonna be alright”.’

Rapper Rah Digga penned: ‘I feel crazy posting back to back death like this but #HurricaneG is family as well as a legend and my good sis deserves her flowers. Rest easy my G.’ 

Producer Pete Rock shared a video of her performing and wrote: ‘I cant believe this. I just spoke to her about a month ago.’ 

Hurricane G was of Puerto Rican descent but was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and throughout her 30-year career, performed rap in English and Spanish.

She was the Hit Squad’s first female member and famously collaborated with a number of prominent stars, including Redman, Xzibit and Puff Daddy. 

Gloria made an eye-catching appearance on the 1992 Redman hit Tonight’s da Night. before appearing on Red’s Dare Iz A Darkside in 1994. and featured in Puff Daddy’s Public Enemy 2000 hit from his 1999 album, Forever.

The talented rapper’s, much-delayed debut album, All Woman, was released in 1997. 

Her 1997 solo single Somebody Else, from her debut album, reached the top ten of the Hot Rap singles chart. 

In 2013, she went on to release her follow-up album: Mami & Papi, featuring Thirstin Howl III.

News of Hurricane G’s passing emerged as the hip hop world was already mourning New Jersey rapper Tame One, 52, who died on Sunday evening.

Tame One, AKA Tamer Dizzle, was born born Rahem Brown, and according to multiple reports, his mother Darlene Brown Harris said on Facebook: “The medical examiner says the six pharmaceutical drugs that Trinitas hospital prescribed to him last Friday, combined with the weed he smoked over this weekend…his heart simply gave out.

“I will not be responding to all the posts for a bit, but the hardest words I will ever post or say is, my son, my heart, is dead.”

As well as his solo offerings, Tame One was best known for his work with Artifacts, Leak Bros, and The Weathermen. 

Tame One and Hurricane G both feature in the video for Redman’s Tonight’s Da Night.
