I’m a Celeb: Sam Thompson cheerful as he lands in Australia
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Sam Thompson has opened up about taking his Strictly Come Dancing star girlfriend Zara McDermott’s mind off the “intense” content she covers in her eye-opening documentaries in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.
In a wider chat about his work with Boots, which sees him present The Locker Room series in a bid to get more men talking about their mental health, the Made In Chelsea star spoke about his relationship with the former Love Island contestant following her exit from the Strictly dancefloor.
Sam, 31, and Zara, 26, who can often be seen making hilarious TikTok and Instagram videos together, have been enjoying a busy year of TV appearances.
Outside of reality television, however, Zara can also be seen making hard-hitting documentaries for the BBC, including Disordered Eating, Uncovering Rape Culture and Revenge Porn.
Sam explained that, while it is often “fascinating” to discuss the complex issues Zara covers in her documentaries, he feels it is also important to help her switch off after such an “intense” experience.

He explained: “It’s quite easy to talk about this kind of stuff, because it’s fascinating when she comes back and tells me, ‘Oh my god, I did this…’
“But on the other hand, a lot of the documentaries that she’s made are incredibly heartfelt and they’re very hard-hitting.
“And sometimes you just want to come through the door and have a conversation with your boyfriend about what his day entailed – even if it’s just a TikTok dance with Pete [Wicks]!
“So there are times where we don’t talk about the heavy stuff, because I want to take her mind off it,” he continued.
“Because when you film a documentary, you’re in it, you’re fully in it from the beginning to the end. You’re filming every day and it’s really intense.

“So sometimes, I quite like her to come home and be able to forget about it for an evening.”
Speaking about whether he can envision a TV team-up with Zara in the future, Sam confirmed: “I have absolutely no desire to not work with Zara! I love working with her, it is so fun.
“We’ve never really had much of an opportunity, to be honest. It’s just never been the right time.”
“Zara’s mad busy you know,” Sam explained. She’s got, like, two to three documentaries at one time and she’s obviously just done Strictly – she’s been so busy!
“As have I,” he continued. “I’ve had two lots of Love Island, I’ve got my radio show, my podcast with Pete [Wicks] and the other brand stuff that I do.”
Sam then went on to reveal his small-screen aspirations with Zara, as he admitted: “It’s all about trying to find the time, but one day I would absolutely love to.”
Zara became the fifth celebrity to be sent home from Strictly Come Dancing after the dance-off between her and professional partner Graziano Di Prima and Emmerdale’s Adam Thomas and partner Luba Mushtuk.
While Zara has since exited the BBC show, Sam has just arrived in Australia to film this year’s series of ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, which also stars the likes of former UKIP leader Nigel Farage and Britney Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn Spears.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
