Inside Krishnan Guru-Murthys suspension from Channel 4 after foul-mouthed rant

Tarantino Krishnan Guru Murthy

Krishnan Guru-Murthy is best known as the main anchor of Channel 4 News but it has not always been plain sailing for him, as Express.co.uk delves into a recent controversy that saw him taken off air.

In a clip that made the rounds on social media in October 2022, the correspondent could be heard calling a government minister a “c***” outside 10 Downing Street.

It comes after Krishnan interviewed Northern Ireland minister, Steve Baker, but following their exchange, the former could be heard making an offensive comment.

In a 20-second snippet from the stream, the camera is pointing at a police officer standing guard outside the Prime Minister’s home after Suella Braverman resigned as Home Secretary.

Unclear if he was aware the mic was still on, Krishnan said off-camera: “Thanks a lot, Steve.”

The Tory minster’s response could not be heard, but the news correspondent continued: “It wasn’t a stupid question, Steve, you know it. I’m very happy to go up against you on [PM Liz] Truss any day.”

He then finished: “What a c**t.”

Following the incident, Krishnan issued an apology and tweeted: “After a robust interview with Steve Baker MP I used a very offensive word in an unguarded moment off air.

“While it was not broadcast that word in any context is beneath the standards I set myself and I apologise unreservedly.

“I have reached out to Steve Baker to say sorry.”

Krishnan was suspended for a week following the incident on (October 19) and Channel 4 said his outburst had breached its code of conduct.

A statement from the broadcaster at the time read: “Channel 4 has a strict code of conduct for all its employees, including its programming teams and on-air presenters, and takes any breaches seriously.

“Following an off-air incident, Channel 4 News anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy has been taken off air for a week.”

In an interview with Times Radio, Steve said that sacking Krishnan would be a “service to the public” if he was found to be in breach of his code of conduct.

“I had an interview earlier with a journalist I don’t have a great deal of regard for who I felt was misrepresenting the situation through the construction of his question, which I called out, I think live on air, or I thought it was a pre-record,” he said.

“And he clearly didn’t like that, quite right, too. But I’d be quite honest, I spent a long time live on air, calling him out on his conduct as a journalist and glad to do so any time.

“But it’s most unfortunate that he’s sworn on air like that. If it’s in breach of his code of conduct, I do hope they sack him – it would be a service to the public.”

After appearing on that station, he replied to Krishan’s tweet, accepting the apology and saying he “appreciated” the gesture.

Meanwhile, the Channel 4 News host is swapping his reporting of foreign affairs and live debates for the Strictly dancefloor.

Speaking to the BBC, he gushed: “I’m surprised, delighted and slightly confused to find myself taking part in Strictly on the basis of ‘you only live once!’ and I can’t wait to start learning to dance, but I am slightly worried about my general decrepitude.

“I know I’m going to love it and have a brilliant time and just hope I’m not the only one enjoying my participation.”
