Jack Tweed has opened up on how his late wife Jade Goody would be proud of her sons, with Bobby Brazier kick-starting his acting career and smashing his modelling jobs.
Goody tied the knot with Jack before her death in 2009 at the age of 27 from cervical cancer. She shared sons Bobby, 19, and Freddie, 17, with Jeff Brazier, but the pair also have a relationship with stepdad Jack.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk ahead of taking part in the Jade Goody Memory Walk Family Day on September 25, Jack said of Bobby: ‘He’s in EastEnders! He’s doing his modelling as well, I’m really pleased for him. Jade would be really proud’.
He added of Bobby choosing a career in the public eye: ‘If you met Bobby, he’s sort of made for that life – he’s got so much confidence, he’s like his mum in a lot of ways. I’m not worried about it!’
Jack, 35, explained that Bobby and Freddie have attended the fundraising campaigns for their mum, including a charity ball last month that raised more than £30,000 for the Trust for Complementary Cancer Rehabilitation.
‘I still talk to them. Freddie was away when I did the ball but Bobby came down and I went for dinner with him the other month as well, it is good to stay in touch. They’re doing really well for themselves.’
He added that it’s important for him to talk to them about their mum, saying: ‘Bobby actually looks exactly like his mum, so we had a big conversation about that the other day. He does always ask questions.’
As for how he’s doing, Jack pointed out that after 13 years, the grief doesn’t go away.
‘You don’t really get over it, you just learn to live with it. This has helped me, when I’ve started doing this charity. It feels like she’s back in my life a little bit, so it’s helping me.’
The Jade Goody Memory Walk will take place on September 25, with many of the star’s loved ones attending.
It will leave from St John’s Church, High Road, Buckhurst Hill in Essex, for a three-mile walk to Loughton Rugby Club, and donations can be made through JustGiving.
‘James Argent, Jackiey’s coming, Jade’s mum, I think Bobby and Freddie are gonna come down, and a lot of Jade’s friends are coming,’ Jack explained.
Jack went on to point out that, with his fundraising efforts, he wants to increase the number of people attending cervical screenings and lower the age of people getting their first screening.
‘When Jade passed away, people going to get their [cervical screenings] raised by 90% and it’s fallen again now so I wanted to raise as much awareness as possible. Also, I want to lower the age. At the minute, the age is 25 for the screening tests and I think that’s ridiculous. It should be 18.’
Jack also has further plans for charity events, including a fireworks night, a Christmas event, and a boxing night, as well as potentially a festival for next year.
‘I’d like to open a rehabilitation centre in Jade’s name,’ he continued.
‘I met a person the other day who started crying to me. She took her daughter to the hospital because she was bleeding and they wouldn’t test her because she wasn’t the right age for it, and then she ended up passing away. If the age of [cervical screenings] was lowered, she’d still be here.’
He added of the star’s legacy: ‘As I’ve been going around giving out leaflets for this walk, and obviously been talking to people, the amount of people who still know Jade and it’s affected their lives, what Jade went through. It’s helped them – the amount of stories I head, “Because of Jade I went and got tested and it’s saved my life.” It is nice, hearing that she’s making changes in the world.’
The Trust for Complementary Cancer Rehabilitation aims to help people living with cervical cancer, including wellbeing and practical support to people affected by cancer, their family, supporters and friends.
