When your dad is a presenter and your mum became a household name following her stints on reality TV, there’s no surprise that Bobby Brazier was going to follow in their showbiz footsteps.
The 19-year-old is walking onto one of the UK’s biggest soaps next week as EastEnders' latest heartthrob Freddie Slater, and we can hardly wait.
Especially after OK! got an invite down to Albert Square to chat to Bobby about his new role – plus a sneaky tour around the set!
Here, Bobby – the son of Jeff Brazier, 43, and Jade Goody, who passed away in 2009, tells us all about what trouble Freddie will be bringing to the Square when he joins the show to look for his dad.
Hi, Bobby! What’s the reaction been to the announcement that you were joining EastEnders?
There’s been a lot of love and support, I’ve been very lucky. People are really excited to see Freddie. I’m really excited for people to see him, I feel very supported.
I feel like people want the best for me and the fact that I feel that off set makes me feel more comfortable on set. It means I can learn quicker and become a better actor, which is what I’m here to do.
What can you tell us about Freddie so far?
He isn’t a geezer, he’s not trying to prove himself as a bad boy. He’s got a lot of depth to him and he’s in touch with that.
He’s a lad in a way that he does silly things, he’s kind of reckless but it always comes from a place of that depth. Freddie’s still developing as well, which is really fun.
Has the cast welcomed you into the fold?
There’s not a standout person, but everyone has made me feel so welcome quickly. I feel really lucky because very early on I slid into a place of calmness and because of that I think it translates on screen. That’s purely because of everyone around me making me feel so comfortable.
I had Zoom calls before I came in and everyone was saying it’s like a family and there’s a lot of love. I felt that straight away when I came here.
I want to give a special mention to Lacey [Turner, who plays Stacey Slater]. Lacey feels like home, she doesn’t realise how beautiful and funny she is. But then I can say that about Emma [Barton, who plays Honey Mitchell] too… well, all of them.
You have some emotional scenes. How were they?
I’ve been thrown in at the deep end! It was a huge moment for me. I had an emotional scene where I came into the café and I was like, “I don’t want bulls**t any more, stop lying to me.”
There was grief, anger… there was a lot of emotion, Freddie was very overwhelmed. Before we filmed it, I had prepped but I hadn’t got into the emotions. So I decided to lock myself in my dressing room and get the emotions of Freddie and really understand the feelings of the scene and I feel like I smashed it.
I was overwhelmed with emotion to the point where I was shaking. After the scene, Emma and Perry [Fenwick, who plays Billy Mitchell] got up and gave me a big kiss and cuddle. I really appreciated that.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
