James Corden faced intense backlash months before chat show host quit US

James Corden brings his Late Late Show to an end

James Corden captured the US audience with his hugely popular series, The Late, Late Show, but announced his exit last year.

The Gavin & Stacey actor has had some memorable moments on the programme but it was not without some controversy.

Before the comedian’s exit, he responded to backlash over his segment “Spill Your Guts”, which was branded “culturally insensitive” back in 2021.

During the segment, celebrities are asked to choose between answering a tough question and eating something “unusual”.

Twelve thousand people signed a petition to ban the eating challenge.

Many of the dishes served up for the celebrity to gag on are actually culturally Asian dishes, explained activist and artist Kim Saira, who began the petition on Change.org.

Famous faces who took part in the challenge were Harry Styles and Kim Kardashian, just to name a few.

James once ate a turkey testicle to avoid answering the question of which is Will Ferrell’s worst film, as the actor was sitting with him.

Activist and artist Kim Saira, who began the petition on Change.org, said of the dishes served up for the celebrity to gag on are actually culturally Asian dishes.

The petition read: “The foods that are presented are meant to be ‘gross,’ as they are supposed to encourage the guest to answer his questions instead.

“However, many of the foods that he presents to his guests are actually from different Asian cultures.

“He’s presented foods such as balut, century old eggs and chicken feet, and which are often regularly eaten by Asian people.”

In response to the controversy, James said he wouldn’t completely remove the segment, but rather update the foods used.

“The next time we do that bit we absolutely won’t involve or use any of those foods,” Corden said while speaking to Howard Stern on June 16. “Our show is a show about joy and light and love – we don’t want to make a show to upset anybody.”

In April 2022, James announced his departure from The Late Late Show.

His candid statement read: “It’s been a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show.

“I’m thrilled to be extending [for a year]. I always thought I’d do it for five years and then leave, and then I stayed on.

“I’ve really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure.”

The star has subsequently shed further light on his decision to leave now, saying it was down to “putting down roots” in London with his family and said the move “feels absolutely right in every single way”.
