The former Saturday Kitchen host revealed that the sports star lives close to him in Hampshire, and therefore it was easy to meet on the River Test.
However, he quickly realised that he had chosen the wrong shoes.
Car enthusiast James admitted: “On my first outing with him I realised quickly that I had made a rookie error by wearing suede shoes.
“They were ruined by the end of the day but it didn’t put me off.”
Despite his uncomfortable blunder, the former BBC star revealed that “the river [was] so tranquil”, it allowed him to spot wildlife.
He added that time would fly when taking part, explaining: “I planned to go fishing for an hour or so but I ended up staying the entire day.
“I get in the zone and forget about everything else.”
James continued: “I love the challenge of it – it’s me against the fish.”
The Yorkshire-born star will return to host The Investec Enclosure restaurant at The Game Fair, for the fifth time, this year.
