John Whaite says he cried every day after Strictly
John Whaite confessed his feelings for his Strictly Come Dancing partner Johannes Radebe were so strong that he was even jealous of the sweat beads on his skin.
In a candid new interview with The Times, he admitted that he “fell in love” with his charismatic co-star, despite having a fiancé at home, Paul Atkins, whom he began dating 15 years ago.
Meanwhile, in extracts from his newly-released memoir, Dancing On Eggshells, which were obtained by The Sun, he opened up on the extent of his fondness for Johannes, with whom he reached the final two in the competition.
“I felt a sense of loss [when the show was over] because I wouldn’t get to see Johannes every single day,” he wrote.
“‘I was jealous of the sweat beads as they shimmered on his beautiful skin. I wanted to be close to him… [When] we hugged goodbye, I didn’t want to let go.”

“Johannes knew that [the curse] could happen. He had seen it a thousand times with his dance companions over the years,” he continued.
‘When you are physically pressed against another man for 10 hours a day, things move emotionally.”
In the aftermath of the bond he formed with Johannes, John’s fiancé Paul moved back in with his parents so that the couple could have some time apart and reassess their partnership.
“14 years in a solid relationship with a man who loves me unconditionally, a man who would move the earth to make me feel safe and I was p***ing all over it,” he exclaimed.

Ultimately, the pair saved their relationship and contact with Johannes now only happens occasionally, although John has confirmed he would cut ties with him altogether if Paul found their continuing friendship too “tricky”.
“I look at Paul and what he’s put up with over the years and how he’s nurtured me and stood by me, and who would throw that away? I couldn’t,” he told The Times.
Meanwhile, he has offered a brief insight into what he thinks Johannes was feeling as they danced their way to the final two couples, losing out only to Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.
“I fell in love with him. I can’t speak for him – because I’m not allowed to, legally – but it felt like there was love there,” John explained.
Meanwhile, he added that, although most of his male friends are straight, he does still tend to “worry” about male interactions from time to time.
“You go through life being told that you’ll fall in love with someone, you’ll get married, you’ll have children and that’s it – but love can’t just be directed to one person,” he mused.
“The heart can easily split into two or three or four.”
John’s book, Dancing On Eggshells, is out today.
