One of Hollywood’s most famous actors, Johnny Depp, turns 60 years old today.
While the star is largely known for his memorable roles in films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, his love life has also often been in the spotlight over the past few decades.
Johnny’s turbulent marriage, messy divorce and hugely-publicised court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, 37, have been well documented.
However, the star’s love life before Amber has also been a subject of intrigue, as it includes some of the world’s most famous actresses, singers and models.
As the legendary actor celebrates his 60th birthday, Express.co.uk takes a look back at his star-studded dating history.
Lori Anne Allison
Johnny married his first wife, Lori Anne Allison, when he was just 20 years old.
He wed the makeup artist, who was six years his senior, in 1983.
Johnny reportedly met Lori Anne through her brother, with whom he played in a band called Kids, and many have credited her for helping him start his career.
In fact, she introduced him to famed actor Nicolas Cage, who helped Johnny secure an audition for his first on-screen role in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street.
While the couple split in 1985, Lori told TMZ that her ex-husband is a “soft person” who never hit or yelled at her, despite accusations from his second ex-wife Amber Heard.
Sherilyn Fenn
Johnny first met Sherilyn Fenn when they were shooting a short film called Dummies in 1985.
The pair dated for nearly three years, during which time the famous Twin Peaks actress made an appearance on Johnny’s popular show 21 Jump Street.
The couple were reportedly even engaged and, while the relationship eventually came to end, the actress has had only positive things to say about Johnny.
She told the Big Issue in 2017: “He was very sweet. He was my first love.
“I had found real love. It was with someone who was walking the same path, but even if he wasn’t, the love and the connection was strong enough — cooking meals, hanging out, laughing and crying… I know him as a human, not a movie star.”

Jennifer Grey
Johnny began dating Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey in 1989 and, in her 2022 memoir Out of the Corner, she claimed he proposed to her within two weeks of meeting her.
She also revealed that she was engaged to the actor, as well as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off actor Matthew Broderick, within the same month.
Jennifer has described Johnny as “ridiculously beautiful” and “surprisingly open, funny, quirky and sweet”, but also said that she later called off the engagement after only nine months together after he developed anger and jealousy issues.
She said that when she would go away for filming, Johnny would act “crazy jealous and paranoid” when she returned.
Giving her thoughts on Johnny and Amber’s trial, she said: “All I can say about that trial is that it breaks my heart for everybody involved.
“I just think it’s sad and I wish it was resolved and I just wish everybody well.”
Winona Ryder
Johnny first came across Winona Ryder in 1989, when the then-27-year-old star spotted the 18-year-old actress at the premiere of Great Balls of Fire.
The pair met months later through a mutual friend and when on to star together as star-crossed lovers in Tim Burton’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands.
The couple got engaged after just five months and stayed together for three years before splitting in 1993.
Despite their break-up, the pair still speak fondly of each other, with Winona saying he was “never abusive at all” during their relationship during his court battle against ex-wife Amber.
Ellen Barkin
Johnny began seeing actress Ellen Barkin in 1994 while she was separated from her then-husband, Irish actor Gabriel Byrne.
While the timeline and seriousness of their relationship aren’t clear, Johnny has since claimed Ellen holds a “grudge” against him because he never wanted to make things official between them.
He said this after she testified against him in his UK trial, claiming he once threw a wine bottle at her.
She added in the deposition that there was “always an air of violence around him” and “just a lot of yelling.”
She claimed he eventually became “controlling” and “jealous”, while Johnny refuted all of these claims, calling them “untrue”.
Kate Moss
Johnny started dating British supermodel Kate Moss in late 1994 after meeting through Vanity Fair celebrity writer George Wayne.
While the pair appeared to have a strong romance, it appears their relationship was tumultuous behind the scenes.
Kate and Johnny were potted shouting at each other in public multiple times, with Johnny once being arrested for causing almost $10,000 worth of damage to a hotel room, while Kate was found by police, sitting amid the wreckage.
Despite their rocky romance, the couple stayed together until 1998.
In 2022, Kate supported her ex in his court battle with Amber, after testifying that he had “never kicked me down the stairs”.
Vanessa Paradis
Johnny began dating French singer Vanessa Paradis in 1998 following his split from Kate.
The pair met while shooting scenes for Roman Polanski’s film The Ninth Gate in Paris.
The couple went on to date for 14 years – Johnny’s longest-ever relationship – and welcomed two children together.
Vanessa gave birth to their daughter Lily-Rose in 1999 and son Jack in 2002.
Sadly, Johnny and Vanessa decided to split in 2012, with the star telling Rolling Stone at the time that the breakup “wasn’t easy” on either of them – or their children.
He added that it “didn’t stop him caring” about the mother of his children and that they would “always be in each other’s lives”.
Amid his defamation trial in 2020, Vanessa wrote a statement in support of her ex, sharing: “Through all these years I’ve known Johnny to be a kind, attentive, generous and non-violent person and father.
“This is nothing like the true Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience of many years, I can say he was never violent or abusive to me.”
Amber Heard
Johnny first met his second ex-wife Amber on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009, while he was still in a relationship with Vanessa.
In June 2012, Johnny and Vanessa confirmed they had split, but it wasn’t until 2013 that the actor confirmed he was dating Amber.
The couple got engaged two years later in 2014, by which time there were already rumours of turmoil between them.
Despite this, the pair tied the knot in Los Angeles in 2015 and then broke up one year later in 2016.
After their split, Amber sought a domestic violence restraining order against her ex, while he denied the allegations.
in August 2016, Amber and Johnny reached a $7 million divorce settlement out of court and released a joint statement.
It read: “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.
“Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.”
In 2018, Amber alleged she was a victim of domestic violence in an open op-ed for the Washington Post.
While she did not mention Johnny by name, Johnny went on to sue her for defamation, with Amber filing her own countersuit in 2020.
In 2022, both parties took to the stand in a defamation trial based in Virginia, and the jury reached a verdict that Amber had defamed Johnny.
Amber must now pay Johnny $10.35 million in damages, while she herself was awarded $2 million in damages after winning one of three defamation counts.
