Judy Finnegan suffered ‘bad postnatal depression’, reveals daughter Chloe

Chloe Madeley has opened up about her mum Judy Finnegan's postnatal depression battle.

The personal trainer, 35, said her famous mother, 74, was suffering from mastitis at the time and believes it was the catalyst for her 10-month PND battle.

Speaking to OK!, Chloe said: “The whole pregnancy, the thing I was most nervous about was the feeding. My mum got really bad mastitis and she kind of said that was the kind of decline, she got bad postnatal depression, and that was the catalyst that led to that.”

Judy bravely revealed she suffered with postnatal depression after the birth of Chloe, saying in a previous interview at the time: "I had very bad postnatal depression after my daughter Chloe was born.

"I had no idea what was wrong with me, and having it made me realise that I am prone to depression. But I suffer more from anxiety."

But she said her husband Richard Madeley helped her through with his "talent for happiness".

Chloe, 35, said she was thankful her breastfeeding journey had been smoother, revealing daughter Bodhi has been feeding like a “dream.”

She added: “A lot of our friends told us they really struggled to breastfeed and it made those first few weeks and days really hard, so I was really focused on that my whole pregnancy.

“And the one thing I thought would go to plan – the water birth – didn’t, and the one thing I thought was going to be a huge problem for me – breastfeeding – wasn’t. I’m incredibly lucky.

“My milk came in on day 3. It’s not the most comfortable thing in the word, breastfeeding, but you do get used to it and you do toughen up a little bit physically and mentally, and she feeds like a dream.”

Bhodi arrived at 8.36am on 10 August, weighing 7lb 9oz and with “long legs like her dad’s” after a difficult eight-hour induced labour ended in a C-section. Chloe had planned on having a natural water birth with gas and air but when Bodhi stayed put 24 hours after her waters had broken, she was told she needed to be induced due to the risk of infection.

Chloe’s parents were the first people to meet the beautiful bundle and arrived at the hospital “fit to burst”.

Judy told OK!: "It’s totally different being a grandmother to a mother. She’s our fourth grandchild now and it’s extraordinarily joyful. It feels almost primitive in a way. You feel like it’s almost part of your clan, like they’re an extension of the tribe.

“Chloe’s my only daughter – my other grandchildren were born to my sons, and it’s different when it’s your daughter. You just feel so close to her. I still can remember her at that age, and to see her with her own baby now, I think she’s fantastic and I really do mean that.

“I’m astonished. It was a fairly sort of traumatic little birth for her but she’s not freaked out at all, she’s been completely calm. She obviously adores the baby, which is just lovely for me to see. You know, she just bonded with her straight away, she’s deeply in love with her and she’s a really good mum! It’s a big deal, first baby.

"They’re both incredibly happy. You see so many young mothers who look very shocked, understandably, and I’m sure I was very shocked when I had my first – my first were twins and I didn’t know – but honestly, she’s fantastic.”
