Kate Garraway reveals Derek has been back in hospital
The last couple of years haven’t been easy for GMB host Kate Garraway and her family. Her husband, Derek Draper, 55, is still in recovery after falling seriously ill with Covid back in March 2020.
Former lobbyist and political advisor Derek was placed in an induced coma to help fight the virus at the time.
He’s since been dubbed the worst-affected living Covid patient in the UK, having spent 13 months in hospital before returning home and requiring 24-hour care.
But for Kate, who is due to turn 56 on May 4, there’s something on the horizon to celebrate.
After marking her 54th birthday in 2021, Kate told her friend and ITV co-host Lorraine Kelly, 63, about how Derek, whom she married in a star-studded ceremony back in 2005, caused a stir of emotion on her special day.

Speaking on the morning show to Lorraine, Kate revealed how she spoke to her other half about her birthday approaching that week and, whilst tucking him into bed, had told him not to worry; she wasn’t expecting a gift, as him being home was the best gift she could have had.
On the morning of her birthday, as she was preparing to leave for the interview with Lorraine, she recounted Derek’s unexpected birthday wishes, not long after suffering from rare brain inflammation triggered by Covid.
She told Lorraine two years ago: “So I came in this morning and said, ‘Right, I’m all ready’. My mum and dad are there, and of course the nurses are there, and I said, ‘I’m off to Lorraine, is there anything you want to say to me?’ and he said, ‘Oh, happy birthday.’
“It makes me feel a bit emotional, actually. It’s happy tears. That is massive.”

She went on to explain why she was so happy with such a simple gesture, saying: “Obviously, it’s wonderful he says happy birthday as that’s what I want to hear, but also we’re looking for things he can hold.
“I’d told him that the night before, I had to prompt him a little bit, but he was just stirring, and we were turning him and doing various things this morning, but he held that idea that it was my birthday and managed to connect it back and repeat it out and that’s wonderful.
“Signs like that are just fantastic.”
Kate, who has two children with Derek; Darcy, 17 and Billy, 13, has documented the journey of caring for her husband and the toll it has taken on her family in an ITV1 documentary Finding Derek, which aired back in 2021 and a book, The Power of Hope.
As well as hosting Good Morning Britain, Kate also hosts a show on Smooth Radio where she recently shared with listeners how Derek was able to enjoy a rare night out to see Sir Elton John on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour at London’s O2 arena.
You can catch Kate on her Smooth Radio show from 10am to 1pm on weekdays.
