Kate Garraway is leaning on her TV pals while she deals with looking after her husband Derek Draper, as stars such as Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh and Susanna Reid hope to give her a distraction.
While the Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, has been enjoying some time out with the girls, sources tell OK! that it's still tough for her as Derek is 'never off of her mind'.
“Kate’s girly nights out definitely help her in some ways because they’re a distraction. But what is happening at home never leaves her," explained the source.
Derek, also 56, suffered severe complications from contracting coronavirus in March 2020 and spent months in the hospital battling for his life.
As he battled to stay alive, Kate's husband was placed into a coma and suffered brain inflammation, kidney failure, damage to his liver and pancreas. While Derek is back at home, he requires round-the-clock care, something which has put immense pressure on Kate.
Our source continued: “She has great friends, including her TV friends, and she’s had a few weekends away and nights out, but the topic often goes back to Derek. He’s never off her mind.
“Her friends are worried that she can’t really switch off properly, so they’re all trying to get around her to support her and get her out."
While juggling work and caring for her husband, the TV presenter is also mother to the couple's two children; 17-year-old Darcey and William, 14.
It's not easy for the star, who is also suffering from guilt while attempting to have fun. “People sometimes forget she’s got her family and two kids as well, she wants to have fun but then she feels guilty as he’s always on her mind and it’s always a worry. She’s never able to totally let her hair down.”
Kate has previously admitted her guilt at spending time away from Derek and shared how she fears of him passing away.
Talking with Good Housekeeping, the Good Morning Britain host said: “I’d love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze.
"But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into the hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us. The unpredictability of his day-to-day condition means we’re living on a rollercoaster.
The star has also suffered her own health issues recently, and even recently detailed being rushed to hospital herself due to stress.
Back in November, Kate was rushed to hospital for urgent tests, including an ECG, she was then told that proteins were detected in her blood that are usually a sign of a heart attack.
The cardiologist warned her that while she wasn't having a "heart attack right now," it could be stress related angina.
