King Charles III has been seen thoroughly enjoying his role as grandfather over the years, following the birth of his grandchildren.
The monarch, 73, has been seen on several public occasions bonding with his grandchildren at events and has spoken of his close connection with them in the past.
Charles expressed his soft spot for one grandchild in particular though, shortly after their arrival in 2015.
The former Prince of Wales was delighted when his first granddaughter Princess Charlotte was born, as he said at the time: "I was hoping for a girl!” before he shared his wish for her.
Charles had been touring Poundbury, near Dorchester, when his son Prince William and Kate Middleton had welcomed their little girl, joining her eldest brother Prince George.
The future King revealed his wish for Charlotte as he told well-wishers: "She is beautiful. I was hoping for a grand-daughter — someone to look after me when I am very old."
King Charles now has five grandchildren from his two sons as William is dad to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, while Harry is father to Archie and Lilibet.
His Majesty shares 10 grandchildren and step-children between wife Queen Consort Camilla.
Camilla, 75, praised Charles as she gave insight into how he is as a grandfather in the BBC documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.
The Queen Consort said: “He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know making funny noises and laughing.”
Camilla added: "My grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him. He reads Harry Potter and he can do all the different voices and I think children really appreciate that."
The Prince of Wales, 40, also championed his father for being a “brilliant” grandfather in the documentary, though he shared his wish for Charles to be able to spend more time with his children.
William said: "It's something I'm working more heavily on, put it that way. I think he does have time for it, but I would like him to have more time with the children.
"I think now he's reached his 70th year it's a perfect time to consolidate a little bit because as most families would do, you are worried about having them around and making sure their health's okay.
“And he's the fittest man I know but equally I want him to be fit until he's 95.
“So, having more time with him at home would be lovely, and being able to you know, play with the grandchildren. Because when he's there, he's brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible."
