Lionesses sail through to Womens World Cup semi-final after beating Colombia 2-1

The Lionesses are one step closer to a World Cup victory after beating Colombia 2-1 in a nail-biting quarter final match.

Despite being 1-0 down 44 minutes into the game, the England women's team managed to pull it back with two goals from Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo.

Columbia's Leicy Santos was the first player to score in the game, shooting the ball above England goalkeeper Mary Earps' head.

It wasn't until five minutes into injury time at the end of the first half that England scored their first goal, thanks to Lauren Hemp.

The 23-year-old saw an opportunity when Colombian goalkeeper Catalina Perez lost the ball after a failed attempt at a goal from her teammate Alessia Russo.

It was 24-year-old Russo who sealed England's place in the semi final, scoring against Daniela Arias, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

Despite eight minutes of extra time, England managed to keep hold of the ball and stop the opposition from scoring again.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were amongst the first to take to social media to celebrate the score.

They wrote on X: "Bring on the semi-finals! A hard-fought win, well done @Lionesses."

Labour leader Keir Starmer wrote: "Great team effort from the @Lionesses. Resilient performance. All eyes on the semi-final now… It's coming home!"

Gary Lineker posted: "Victory again for @Lionesses and they’re through to the semifinals. This is a side that knows how to win. Marvellous!"

EastEnders star Heather Pearce added: "What a game. End to end. Totally nerve wracking. @Lionesses were so strong to hold onto their lead against a brilliant Colombian team."

Fans of the team also rushed to social media, with one writing: "Does anyone else feel it's more stressful watching the #Lionesses than the men's team?

"I know the men will let me down whereas the women genuinely make me feel like they're gonna win the whole bloody thing."

A second added: "Our #Lionesses smashed it. We are through to the semi finals of the World Cup! Get in! Fair play to Colombia for fighting that hard, but I’m so proud of our women. It won’t be easy but…bring on Australia."

Australia failed to score against France after 120 minutes of play, with the 0-0 draw leading to a penalty shootout, where they beat the French team 7-6.

The Lionesses will play against the Matildas on Wednesday night.
