Matthew Perry’s Batman obsession was not a ‘cry for help’, confirms sources

Matthew Perry had developed a fixation with Batman and regularly referred to himself as ‘Mattman’ in the tragic run-up to his death.

The Friends star was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home Saturday night from an apparent drowning aged 54.

Fans have since speculated on social sites that the actor was sending out his own “bat signal” after decades of substance abuse problems.

Previously, Matt even admitted he saw himself as Batman, due to their similarities being a young, damaged individual who channeled the loss of his parents into being a crime-fighting vigilante with a strong sense of justice to help other people.

He did a total of seven Instagram posts relating to Batman, including one video showing large flat screens broadcasting the character’s logo, and a bat signal silhouette at the bottom of his swimming pool.

However, it has now been confirmed by the lady he dined with the day before his death, that this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Athena Crosby told TMZ that Matthew was a “playful guy” and that fans thinking his posts mean more than just a superhero reference are “way off”.

She believes Matthew was just “being a nerd” and believes fans are “jumping on the conspiracy train”.

The editor-in-chief of People Magazine, Wendy Naugle, has also since claimed the word Mattman was referring to a project the actor was working on.

She said on the Today show: “He was writing a little script, that’s where the ‘Mattman’ reference comes from in his Instagram.”

Matthew’s 2022 memoir, Friends Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing also includes several Batman references.

The final sentence of his book reads: “Someday you, too, might be called upon to do something important, so be ready for it.

“And when whatever happens, just think, What would Batman do? and do that.”

Tributes have flooded in for the late star, including from his Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc.
