Meghan Markle makes subtle statement as she opts for minimal jewellery at Queens funeral

The Duchess of Sussex kept her accessories to a minimum as she attended the state funeral of Elizabeth II. But the jewellery she did include in her striking ensemble was particularly sentimental.

The former Suits actress, 41, opted to team her all black caped dress and elbow length gloves with a simple pair of diamond and pearl drop studs which had been gifted to her by the late monarch during an engagement they did together in 2018.

The beautiful jewellery, which could be seen peeking out from Meghan's wide brimmed hat, is thought to be a smaller version of the earrings that the late Queen tended to wear every day.

Meghan has also worn the pearls, which are no doubt now even more precious to her, when she attended a ceremony at Westminster Hall after the Queen's coffin had been transported from Buckingham Palace.

The Duchess revealed the touching story behind the beautiful jewellery during her landmark 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey alongside husband Prince Harry.

She said: "The Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me. I mean, we have our first joint engagements together. She asked me to join her."

"We had breakfast together that morning, and she'd given me a beautiful gift, and I just really loved being in her company."

Revealing the details of the present, she said: "She gave me some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace."

Apart from the sentimental jewellery, Meghan kept the rest of her accessories low key, opting for a high neckline rather than a necklace and wearing a simple golden bangle on her left wrist. The result really ensured the beautiful earrings stood out.

Of course, the pearl earrings are not the first time the Queen bestowed her jewellery upon Meghan. On she and Prince Harry's 2018 wedding day, Meghan wore Queen Mary's Filigree diamond and bandeau tiara, which had been loaned to her by the monarch.

Meghan, who shares son Archie, three and one year old daughter Lilibet with Prince Harry, also has several pieces from the collection of her late mother in law Princess Diana.

Her Cartier watch, for example, was previously worn by Diana and her beautiful engagement ring was designed by Harry using stones from his beloved mother's jewellery collection.

Meanwhile, during she and Harry's interview with Oprah, the duchess wore one of Diana's diamond bracelets and during their 2018 tour of Australia she wore a set of the Princess's butterfly shaped diamond earrings.
