Miley Cyrus, 30, has been busy promoting her latest album Endless Summer Vacation, with its debut single, Flowers, becoming the singer’s best-selling song.
Since its release earlier this year, Flowers has been heavily theorised to be about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
Fans looked into the lyrics, realising the song was released on the Hunger Games actor’s birthday, and claimed her wardrobe choices and location for the music video were all connected to their now-dissolved relationship.
But now speaking in an interview with British Vogue, Miley denied that the song acted as a diary of her experience in her marriage.
She said: “I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience. It will set itself on fire all by itself.
“I wrote it in a really different way. The chorus was originally: ‘I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, but I can’t love me better than you can.’
“It used to be more like the 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better’.”
Miley affirmed that the song is based on the motto “fake it till you make it”, shutting down rumours.
Fans, however, had already come up with their own theories, referencing a 2018 wildfire that destroyed the former couple’s house in the lyric: “Built a home and watched it burn.”

Some even speculated that the suit she wore in the music video was one that belonged to her ex-husband.
Flowers broke several streaming records and in 112 days became the fastest song in Spotify history to surpass one billion streams.
Miley and Liam began dating in 2010, when the Hannah Montana star was just 18 years old and Liam aged 20.
They had an on-and-off relationship for a number of years, before getting married in 2018.
However, they decided to split for good in August 2019, with the pair remaining fairly private on the reasoning for the split, leading to fan speculation.
Miley is now dating rock singer Maxx Morando and has been for over a year, with the pair meeting on a blind date.
Liam has been with his model girlfriend Gabriella Brooks since December 2019.
They have shut down split rumours on numerous occasions and made their first red carpet appearance together in November 2020.
The couple are very private and have only appeared in a handful of pictures together.
