Meghan Markle and Prince Harry flew all the way to England for the Queen’s Jubilee, but apparently their time with Her Majesty was closely controlled by royal staff. The Sun reports that the Sussexes’ visit with the Queen was kept “formal” by palace aides, and they were only able to spend 15 minutes with her.
“It was a quick in and out job,” a source told The Sun. “It was all quite formal.”
Meghan and Harry did get a chance to introduce their daughter Lilibet to her great-grandmother, but they were told cameras couldn’t be present—which means they didn’t get any photos of the special moment.
A source previously told The Sun that “Harry and Meghan wanted their photographer to capture the moment Lilibet met the Queen. But they were told no chance. It was a private family meeting.”
Meanwhile, royal biographer Angela Levin claimed that Netflix was “displeased” that the Sussexes were denied a photo opp. “That image would have been very valuable,” she told The Sun. “Netflix wanted them to get photos with senior royals, and bosses aren’t very pleased with them. That’s why they wanted to go to the service at St Paul’s, so they could be seen in public for their Netflix series, but they would have been astonished at their seats.”
Sounds like the Jubilee was slightly complicated, but Meghan and Harry were able to celebrate Lili’s first birthday at their U.K. home Frogmore Cottage, which was attended by several members of the royal family (note: the Cambridges were not there). A source told The Sun that “it was a lovely do and had everything you’d expect from a child’s birthday party. But there was no formal entertainment. The idea was for it to be very relaxed and casual, with people free to pop in and out as they wished. It was a nice opportunity for the other royal children to meet Lilibet for the first time.”
