Paul Reubens was best known for his character Pee-Wee Herman, which was created in 1981 as a direct reaction to being turned down for Saturday Night Live.

Reubens was a trained improv comic snd would later go on reprise Pee-Wee many times, including in The Pee-Wee Herman Show (1981–1984) and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse (1986–1991), and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, in 1985.

Reubens also appeared in many films, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Matilda, Doctor Doolittle, Batman Returns, Dunstan Checks In, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

He also appeared in recurring roles in TV shows including Gotham, Legends of Tomorrow and The Blacklist.

In 2019, Reubens had a hilarious cameo in What We Do in the Shadows Season 1. He played his vampire charcter, Amilyn, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In their statement about Reubens’ death, his representatives said: “Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness.

“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit.

“A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

The comedian largely withdrew from the public eye in 1991, after he was arrested leaving an adult pornography theater in Florida.

At the time, police said they saw a man exposing himself in the cinema.

However, Reubens protested his innocence, later saying in a statement he didn’t do that, or “engage in any other improper activities” while present at the theater.

Reubens friends, including singer Cyndi Lauper, defended him when he lost his job and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse was canceled.

The actor continued to do voice work but stayed out of the public eye for years.

He is survived by his sister, civil rights attorney Abby, and his brother, dog trainer Luke.
