Princess Beatrice has described the close relationship she enjoys with her stepson in a rare public mention of the youngster.
The 34-year-oldroyal, daughter ofPrince Andrew andSarah Ferguson, became step-mum to Christopher Woolf when shemarried Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020.
The couple have kept the boy, known as Wolfie, out of the public spotlight as much as possible and it is highly unusual for Bea to talk about the seven year old – who is son of her millionaire husband and his ex, the architect Dara Huang.
But during a speech at Oscar’s Book Prize – which hands out an award for the best picture book of the year for young children – Beatrice spoke about Wolfie’s love of reading, in doing so revealing the sweet bond they share.
The princess, who is Patron for Oscar’s Book Prize, said at its glitzy prize-giving ceremony: “The award holds a very special place in my heart. My stepson, who is now seven, and I eagerly look forward to receiving the books and going through them together.
“Growing up in a world surrounded by books, we can take for granted that not everyone is so lucky. We need to remember in a world of screens and AI, it is moments of community, including between parents and children that we need to keep alive.”
She added: “I was reminded this weekend – it’s been a bit of a big weekend – about the importance of community.
“I also know the importance of literacy to Her Majesty TheQueen.”
Beatrice rubbed shoulders with stars such asNadine Coyle andDenise Van Outen at the awards ceremony at The Ivy on Tuesday as this year's winner was announced as The Boy With Flowers in His Hair by writer and artist Jarvis.
The prize was set up by James Ashton and Viveka Alvestrand to celebrate stories and encourage parents to share books with their young children. It is named in memory of their son Oscar, who died from an undiagnosed heart condition aged three in December 2012.
A friend of Beatrice has previously spoken about how the princess has embraced the step-mum role.
The pal told theDaily Mail: "She’s very concerned about getting it right and making every effort to be a second mother to Wolfie.
"Bea has always been really close to Edo’s family, so it’s natural that Wolfie should become part of hers.
"He’s a super little boy and extremely cute. It will be interesting to see what happens when they start their own family – but Bea is so caring, his happiness will always be her number one priority."
Beatrice delighted royal watchers by wearinga stunning, bright magenta dress to attend her uncle King Charles’ Coronation on Saturday.
She also appeared in somebehind-the-scenes snaps from the historic weekend that were shared by her younger sister Princess Eugenie.
