Rachel Riley prefers working with Colin Murray over ‘headmistress’ Anne Robinson

Rachel Riley, 37, has said it’s “no secret” she prefers working with Countdown’s new host Colin Murray, 46, over his predecessor Anne Robinson, 78.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star appeared to clash with Anne during her 13-month tenure on the long-running Channel 4 series.

Anne became the show’s first female host when she took over from Nick Hewer in June 2021, but she departed Countdown last July to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline about host Colin, Rachel has described how fans have noticed the show has changed since Anne’s departure, which she is happy about.

She said: “The viewers have noticed that it’s a different type of show now.

“Anne was a lot more headmistress style and that suits some people, and some people enjoyed it. I don’t think it’s any secret that I am enjoying working with Colin a lot more.

“She’s been in the industry a long time and she knows what she wants so she decided to leave and good luck to her, but Countdown is not really about us, any of us could go and as long as the letters and numbers are still there… then that’s what the viewers want.

“I am not under any illusion that people watch it for me… they watch it because they like to play the game so long may that continue.”

It seems Radio 1 host Colin has also managed to bring a certain comedic flare to the role, with Rachel noting that he has an equally dirty mind as her.

She even compared his hosting style to that of the 8 Out of 10 Cats edition of Countdown, where presenter Jimmy Carr and guests offer up much naughtier material due to it’s later-night showing.

Rachel said: “8 Out of 10 Cats has bought it to a new audience as well because it’s a prime-time comedy on a Friday night.”

“With Colin, we are at the same level and because he’s a radio presenter he’s used to working under pressure and he’s used to that environment.”

“Sometimes I put a rude word up just to see if he will notice and whether he will be able to carry on or not and he’s filthier than I am.”

Countdown airs today at 2:10pm on Channel 4.
