Actor Rob Brydon, 57, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, 53, both attended Dumbarton House School, a private school in Swansea when they were young. Closed in 1993, the school also educated filmmaker and novelist Ben Pickering, as well as the two award-winning actors. Back in 2011, rumours first circulated that Rob, who is a few years older than Catherine, once stole the money her mother had given the aspiring actress for lunch, but the speculation has now firmly been set straight by the Gavin and Stacey actor.
Speaking on the White Wine Question Time with Kate Thornton, who asked the actor directly if the rumours held any truth, Rob replied: “Well there is a lot of truth in this, but I would take issue with the word ‘stole’.”
Retelling the story, Rob continued to say: “What happened was, she did go to the same school as me and at the same time as me.
“A school in Swansea that is no longer there, Dumbarton.
“One day her mum was leaving the school and said, ‘Oh I have forgotten to give Catherine her lunch money, would you give it to her?’
“I said of course, and then when we were down the road where we got our lunch, our chips and ‘healthy’ 1970s lunches, I spent it on either cola cubes or pineapple chunks.”
Explaining that he had indeed spent the money on sweets instead of giving it to Catherine for lunch, Rob went on to explain that had not intentionally done so.
He added: “I just put my hand in my pocket and thought ‘Wow I have money, I don’t know why I have this!’
“So I didn’t really steal it, but I like to think the lunch that she missed that day gave her the determination that has seen her conquer the world of entertainment,” Rob joked.
In a throwback interview with Digital Spy, Rob was again asked about his time with Catherine at school and whether their paths had ever crossed, beyond the lunch money debacle.
The actor admitted that the two were never really close, and even when they met as adults, Catherine couldn’t remember who he was.
Rob shared: “I didn’t know her but I remember her – she was always dancing or performing in things.
“I met her briefly once at the BAFTAs and congratulated her, but I’m sure she wouldn’t have a clue who I was. I’ve spent four minutes in her company.”
Throughout the podcast chat with presenter Kate, Rob answered three thought-provoking questions over three glasses of wine, as well as myth busting some well-known rumours about his life.
Another crazy real-life story concerned the birth of Rob’s fourth child, which he completely missed due to being on a golf course with the late Ronnie Corbett.
“That is totally true,” Rob admitted. “I did a whole routine about that in my stand up. I played golf and Ronnie became a friend of mine and it was my wife Clare’s first child and it is often thought that a woman’s first child is always late, nine days to go, off I went to play golf.
“Then Clare rang and said ‘I think it’s happening’, and next Ronnie turned to me and said, ‘We better get you home’, and so we did.”
Rob is known for having numerous A-list friends, including Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Oasis legend Noel Gallagher.
“It’s a funny thing when you find yourself becoming chums with someone like that, when you sort of hit it off,” Rob shared, when speaking to Kate about Noel.
“Every time I’ve met Noel, we’ve always got on like a house on fire.”
The star even appeared in a film alongside Richard Gere and the late Sir Sean Connery when he bagged a part in medieval blockbuster First Knight back in 1995.
