Sarah Snook was CRUSHED when Succession ended after four seasons as she had hoped a fifth would happen: ‘It was devastating!’
Sarah Snook was radiant in a plunging ensemble while appearing on the latest cover of Variety as she revealed that the end of HBO’s Succession was ‘devastating’ to her.
The Golden Globe winner, 35, who was recently labeled as ‘the nicest celebrity ever,’ notably portrayed the role of Shiv Roy on the show, which came to an end after four seasons in May.
The star, who recently welcomed her first child, a baby girl, opened up her thoughts on saying goodbye to the series and the future of her character.
Snook revealed that she had discovered there would not be a fifth season at ‘the last read-through,’ and added, ‘everyone else found out effectively then’ as well.
‘It was devastating, Sarah admitted. ‘I didn’t get a chance to finish the script before I got to the read-through.’

‘I was quickly devouring it in the car on the way there. And then by the time I finished, I just arrived and was like, “That’s it. It’s done,”‘ the star explained.
She recalled that her co-star, Matthew, had been ‘hopeful’ for another season at the read-through. ‘But then once we got into the room, Jesse made an announcement saying, “Yeah. As you can see, this is the last.”‘
Jesse Armstrong is notably the creative mind behind the hit series, which went on to win a Golden Globe for Best TV Series and also an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series during the course of its airtime.
After a rivalry between the Roy siblings – also played by Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin – Shiv’s husband, Tom, portrayed by Matthew Macfayden, became the CEO of Waystar RoyCo to conclude the show.
In regards to what Sarah believes is next for Shiv, the actress stated that she, ‘is about to have a baby, all of this has gone down, she’s sort of thrown back into a world with her husband that wasn’t a great situation beforehand.’
‘But I think the baby thing is really about to hit in a way that is inescapable. And she’s probably someone who would go into quite a deep postpartum depression, and quite a difficult next 12 months, I think,’ she continued.
The star had revealed that she was pregnant while shooting the fourth and final season of Succession, which was written into the series. She publicly announced to the world that she was expecting at the season four premiere in March.
‘Whatever fight that she has, in that moment, they are equal,’ Snook explained, referencing to Shiv and Tom. ‘But she’s about to slide down, I think, pretty rapidly.’

Upon discovering that Tom would become CEO at the end, Snook revealed her initial response. ‘I was like, “Are you f***ing kidding me?”‘
‘I never really considered that Tom becoming CEO is Shiv, by proxy, winning. For Shiv, that is so not a win! That is: “I’m once again power adjacent. I’m not the winner,”‘ the beauty explained.
Despite saying farewell to Succession, Sarah reflected on the time that she was on the show and the love that it had received over the years.
She expressed that she was, ‘so proud of how it finished up, and just in awe that Jesse had the guts as well to pull the pin on something that was so successful.
‘And it’s such a bold move, and it’s really paid off. But I think the joy that we all experienced shooting the show, both in the challenges and in the good times, meant that I happily would have done a fifth season,’ she added to the outlet.
The mother of one explained that Jesse did a perfect job of putting ‘the nail in the coffin’ when it came to the finale.
‘But in the world of what the family is, it’s a new configuration — Dad’s gone. It’s a different show, I think. The world exists, but I can’t see him doing the world again.’
Although the beloved series ended, Sarah admitted that she took a few mementos from the set, such as a few costumes and also ‘photos of Shiv on the wedding day with Dad.’ Brian Cox played the role of Logan Roy, the father and patriarch of the company.

At the time the last episode of the fourth season aired on HBO, Sarah took to her Instagram to reflect to her fans about the end and also gave a small glimpse of her newborn.
‘It’s hard to express what this show has meant to me. The places I got to go, the immense talent I got to work with…it breaks my heart that it is all over,’ she emotionally penned.
‘But my heart had to be this full of all the memories, good times, challenges and triumphs, to be able to break at all…so that makes me grateful.’
‘To have been blessed to join this crazy adventure of a show will be a career highlight, which will no doubt be hard to top,’ she added, then later gushed about the ‘friendships’ as well as the ‘highs and lows’ from the series.
‘I’m going to miss it all. The people of this show are a talented bunch, and I’m proud to have worked alongside them, it’s the people I will miss most of all.’
