The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is reportedly “floored” following the death of Sinead O’Connor on Wednesday.
The 56-year-old’s death was announced by her “devastated” family in a statement released to The Irish Times.
Fairytale Of New York singer Shane, 65, has also been in an intensive care unit due recently due to a health scare, and was said to be shocked by the news of her death.
The pair had been friends for decades and had released the duet Haunted in 1990.

Shane’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke took to Twitter to express the couple’s grief.

‘We pray that you are at peace now with your beautiful boy. Love Victoria and Shane.’
She then added another post to highlight Sinead’s sense of humour.
“I also just wanted to share that she was incredibly funny! She told outrageous jokes at the most inappropriate times and she cracked me up! There will never be anyone even remotely like her,” she concluded. (sic)

After Sinead lost her son Shane in early 2022, The Pogues singer reached out to comfort her on social media saying: “Sinead you have always been there for me and for so many people, you have been a comfort & a soul who is not afraid to feel the pain of the suffering.
“You have always tried to heal & help. I pray that you can be comforted & find strength, healing & peace in your own sorrow & loss.”
Shane, 17, took his own life in January 2022 after escaping hospital while on suicide watch.
In one of her final tweets before her death this week, the 56-year-old told fans she had been “living like an undead night creature” ever since he passed.
She said: “He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally”.
